Anime Series(jesus...)

I don't like Anime much. Most of the shows I see that are designed in the Anime style seem maladroit, depressingly awful and repetitive. But one caught my eye. A 26 episode show oddly named Cowboy Bebop was the only worth watching despite it's rather idiotic name.

But what is with America's obsession with Anime(or anything Japanese for that matter)? Shows like Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z and such enjoy stellar levels of popularity in our fair country, some more than our own shows. I can respect and admire the imagination of any culture's children. But American adolescents, in particular seem more captivated by it than most. Kids with no discernable social skills(or any skills in communication) that wear DBZ T-Shirts, the kids with Hello Kitty merchandise, the list goes on.

In my opinion, Anime doesn't really fly, friends. No, most shows try to be ambitious, or don't even try at all.

Share your thoughts on this phenomenon.

Indeed Anim'e isn't all that fun... can be rather relaxing to watch though. You know who's the best, you know who's gonna win. And all will be just dandy.

HOwever the main character usually is overdone, his coolness bordering to sillyness.
I sometimes watch it for a laugh.

That's why I liked Cowboy B. The main character was different from any Anime character I had ever seen.

Plus, he dies in the end, something I did not expect to happen in a Japanese cartoon.

Well the kids obsession with DBZ etc. is quite obvious, its not as if kids now days have cool vioilent action packed cartoons like Thundercats and Transformers. There are no positive male role models in todays cartoons, they are dominated either by aggressive dominating tom boy girls or weak boys who win using brains over brawn.

The politically correctness obsessed western animation houses have gone so far as to alienate their key market, children.

As for other Anime, its pretty much the main stream entertainment media in Japan, we have CSI and Star Trek, they have as you point out Cowboy Bepop and Evangellion. Its not like these teens are obsessed with kids stuff, they are watching stuff aimed at an adult age group in Japan. It just happens to be a lot more violent then bogstandard stuff in the US with giant robots.

Im not a big anime fan but i like some things, but i can make the distinction between a "cartoon" and a piece of "animated adult entertainment". Just like the US imports live action tv series from the rest of the world, why shouldnt it import the best mainstream shows the Japanese have to offer, even if they are "just cartoons".

It's the subliminal messages loaded into those cartoons. Aren't they something like 100 frames per second? The average cartoon is around 30.

Kids in Denmark are DBZ/Pokemon crazed as well. They watch it on television, more than danish kid shows. Its crazy! My 6 year old brother has like a bazillion pokemon cards! I dont understand what the buzz is all about, most anime and manga is stupid, boring and badly drawn. Especially the stuff for kids. Some of it is even sexist and sick.

Also kids are tasteless idiots.

Very true. Its amazingly disturbing what kids find cool now-a-days.

Hm, I like those old Saber Rider anime, but that's it, I don't really like those new style cartoons / anime whatever you call it.

Dunno maybe because there are no real heroes as already stated ?
And it's not only those anime, it applies to "home-made" cartoons and TV in general, as well imho.

I barely watch TV these days anyway but any time I switch on, I see some fags spouting nonsense on how fucked up they are. It's like some of those nutless feminist fags took over the whole TV to crush and degenerate mankind with this horseshit ? But maybe that's just the next step in evolution ?

However, don't watch it and everything should be fine ?

I'm no American either, but anime is gaining a lot of ground here in Sweden too. I think that the main thing behind the success of anime is that it's a change of pace from western stuff, something different.

Also, when comparing anime for kids with American kid stuff, I believe that anime respects its audience to a greater degree. Many (although far from all) American kids shows feature morale messages so blatantly obvious that they are insulting, even to kids methinks. Anime shows have those too, but they generally are a little bit less transparent and often more general in scope, like "be nice to people" or "do your best".

Personally I'm quite split when it comes to Anime, but I think it's unfair to generalize and treat all anime as one genre. That said, I think that the crap sadly outnumbers the good and great shows and films. My personal fav at the moment is "Great Teacher Onizuka" (I'm studying to be a teacher, so watch out for you children Swedish forum members!

). I'm also quite a fan of Miyazaki.

Kids like shitty anime for the same reason kids like shitty music: they're fucking children. They don't have any taste. Also: yes, most anime sucks. Most anything sucks. Defining a genre by what's most popular is asinine--it's like defining all rock music by Staind and Evanescence. That being said, Cowboy Bebop's fucking awesome. (The name's sort of Engrishy, but the cowboy bit is a slang term for bounty hunters in the 21st century and the Bebop refers both to the ship and the people ON the ship...loose, haphazard, free, blah blah blah. Good show, though.) I'd also recommend FLCL. By the way, the (I think) director of CB's coming out with a new series called Samurai Champloo--I'll put the link up when I get home.

Yeah I watch the whole 26 episode and their is a shiload of backstory mainly about what happen at the gates incident. Anyway I like anime but I don't love it as I used to be, I have been in anime club in the truth stroke me: most anime are shitty.

On another note I pissed with some of the new series of animation because they feel like an 30 minute comercial about an inane product. In paticular bayblade, this is brain rotting "to the max". I mean in this kind of show everyone are as obess about x (ie: card , animal, pet rock, hair...) as people in porn movie is obsess with sex. Instead of watching these show kids should play it with their friend but instead they watch cartoon about a buch of people who are playing there favorite game, whatever it is.

Samurai Champloo. Unfortunately the trailers run on Realplayer. Still, looks like it has potential...one of the characters is a bit fruity, though.

I remember pogs. I think that I still have a bunch of 'em lying around somewhere. Think they're worth anything?

You can get glove like that and other stuff like that at a Harley-Davidson dealer.
