Notes on designing levels

Post by Flamescreen »

Playing some of the top designers maps lately, some thoughts starting forming in my mind. What's your thoughts on "unconventional" containers? E.g. trees-doormats-flowerpots(I'm thinking of including these in my campaign), tables, or even dead bodies(as OTB recently suggested)? Can the player easily spot these? Would we just make it harder for him to find essential or not items of the campaign/map?

There are scenery sprites for toilets. They work as containers provided you set them to "Always Open"...

You want this little bauble? *hehe* I hope you brought some soap...

I think as long as you had an NPC who would occasionally give clues:

"Back in '36 I hid the loot in a toilet tank in the an old factory building. Can't remember where exactly which is I's poor to this day..."

The idea of floor mat containers and such is a pretty good on, FS. Just make sure you let the player know such containers exist.

Or, you could take the floor mat one step further: Use a trigger to "slide" the mat when an actor "uses" the mat.

I'm revealling stuff of what I'm thinking of doing, but what the heck! I'm intending to use the Door/floor mat to store a key infront of a door for instance(when saying doormat, as in a newly created tile for it). Apart from being a bit obvious, I think it could be seen as slightly funny.

Well, there are "rug" tiles that look like dormats. Try Village -> Objects -> FloorRugs and Raiders -> Objects -> Furniture

Well, there is the problem that none of them has "Welcome" writen on it! :D Besides I use them in other occasions, so I don't want to get extremely repeatetive...

Start looking a bit more closely at the tiles used in the core missions, as well as those on FO RPG maps. The designers themselves are extremely repetitive. There's really no way to avoid it. ;)

Well, what's the tile editor's use for then? :D
*I need 10, no 20, or better yet 30 new doormat tiles. Yep that should be enough*
