The only good fighting games ever...

Post by Phias »

Were made by a company named SNK, in MY opinion. The quality of the art, the gameplay and (at times) the stories, were many miles ahead of the other fighting games of the time.

Samurai Shodown was basicly a better version of Mortal Kombat, having gameplay ahead of it's time. Fatal Fury was also very good.

Their death as a company is a travesty. This brings up a question, and a long un-answered one:

"Why do people ignore the best games available?"
Games like our own beloved Fallout were shoved aside in favor of Baldur's Gate and Diablo. System Shock was second to Doom. Thief was just left behind. It just doesn't make sense that the most talented people in the industry are usually the ones to fail.
Endure. In enduring, grow strong.

I read that SNK went back in business recently, though I'm not sure if the company is made up of the same personnel as before [probably doubtful].

SNK will love on as Capcom's puppet.

Still, a shame. I didn't like the SNK style of graphics, but it was clear they were made with love, and had love made with them as well.

I never understood the SNK love. To me, they just seemed like the poor man's Capcom.

While I agree with you that SNK made good (fighting) games, you're a complete cunt for saying that line there. Doom is only second to Fallout as far as best games go, and yes, I've played System Shock, it is good, but it's not as good as Doom as far as delivering what I want in a fps.

And Fatal Fury sucked until the new ones (when they started to get some interesting characters) and Samurai Showdown still sucks compared to Last Blade. Last Blade one and two are the best fighters, short of Street Fighter, there are.

Yea as SNK playmore or something like that. Their not exactly the same company even though they use alot of former SNK developers. Isn't the original SNK still making Pachinko parlor games? Regardless SNK has been really only true competitor to Capcom in terms of Fighting games and I personally always liked SNK better. Not only for fighting games mind you, but for games like Metal Slug. SNK however is still great. Garou: Mark of the Wolves still occupies a great ammount of time, its one of two reasons I even own a dreamcast. The Fatal Fury games and Art of Fighting games were really good acheivements for their time and the new ones (or atleast Garou) stand the test of time against even todays 2D fighters (All 3 of them). The Last Blade and The Last Blade 2 are also excellent examples as to SNK's developing genius. Samurai Showdown is considered a classic (although not as good as The Last Blade in my opinion) and Samurai Showdown 4 (which was never released in the US to my knowledge) was the best in the series. I think there is to be a Samurai Showdown 5 but I'm not so sure. I have seen screenshots for a new Samurai Showdown however so heres for hoping. Even the King Of Fighters series is better then alot of 2-d romps and whats best about the series is that theres a long line to choose from. KOF 02 and 03 are comming soon and you can pick up 2000 and 2001 right now for about $35. Regardless, I hope SNK playmore will suceed and capture the spirit of SNK.

Maybe because mainstream games usually tend to be simple and therefore pretty shitty? This works in movies and music as well - too often Oscars and Grammies are given to some knuckleheads with no idea of how to make things correctly.

Yes as Kashluk said.

And it is a "well known fact"(tm) that over 75% of the human population are either stupid or don't have the energy to think for themselves. The remaining part of humanity are, through thinking by themselves, very split in their opinions and thus have no impact on sales/popularity.

Yay, that can be proven simply by looking at us. The only thing we agree on is that Fallout rocks, but even issues about Fallout cause arguments. Aren't we elite?

SNK was cool, but there dead. Playmore is just whoring all the licenses. Neo Geo market for AES is ridiculous prices set by the "collectors" who buy everything up and put them in glass cases with lighting. Most of the real players moved to MVS through different ways, but the prices were rising on those too last time I was into this shit. Most people just play them through non-neogeo console ports, which are usually inferior to the real thing.

Its also a "well known fact"(tm) that 3 out of every 4 people who use statistics are making them up. Its also true that 50% of marriages end in divorce while the other 50% end in death.

Dude, you're fucking stupid. System Shock delivered gameplay that was far ahead of it's time, on par with stuff now (and even better than some).

Doom was simple point n' shoot. If you ever played it for beyond 5 seconds, you'd know System Shock out-did Doom in about all areas.

Better graphics, crouch/crawl/jumping, Inventory system with lots of neat items, bad-ass story that still rocks my face to this day, one of the best villians ever (who also trys to impede you with traps and tricks and coming up with my next point...), voice audio logs that give hints, story, all sorts of stuff, voice audio emails from people (like the villian, never heard the Cyberdemon taunt you, eh?). You could lean around corners and shoot, sneak up behind enemies, bounce grendes off a wall down to enemies in waiting and set traps using un-armed grenades and chain explosions from landmines. Implants and cyberspace (which was fully 3D) and all the different effects you'd get from medical derm-patches, awesome music in the game, everything.

Doom did none of this. I dont think the first even had a map? And System Shock's maps were pretty complex and large, too.

System Shock 1+2 > Doom (one could argue apples to oranges though)

On topic : Tekken > EvarYthang (Fucking getting good a Lei Wulongs 'stances' was just awesome...deep game )

Never saw the SNK passion myself, though yea, of course I had my stint with StreetFighter, though again, after Tekken, I could never play another fighter. Virtua Fighter never appealed to me...made it almost sim-like in fighting.

SPEAKING of fighting games...and I can't believe no-one who ever developed a boxing game never thougt of this...but FIGHT NIGHT 2004 is going to have analog punching rather than just hitting buttons. As I understand, the way they're describing it, you move the analog stick in a variety of arcs and lines to determine the punch that you do, with the left stick moving the boxer, whilst depressing a button, the left stick then allows you to bob and weave your guy. This could be very cool.

But it's also a "well known fact"(tm) that 88% of the best and most creative statistics are pulled out of someone's ass. Also, at least 93% of the human population are either male or female.

On the SS vs. Doom issue: While I personally also think that SS is by far a superior game, I wouldn't even put them in the same genre. If you were looking for a quick action fix, you played Doom. If you were looking for a game with a slower pace, some thinking and a kick ass, relatively deep story, you played SS.

edit:
