So tell me, is college pointless?

why? money isn't exactly LEWL INSTO-HAPPINESS! I'd rather do a job I enjoy with little pay or something, like a STREET PERFORMER or STREET DOCTOR or a STREET SURVIVALIST.

I concur, Megatron. Freedom beats money. People who want to be lawyers for the pay, despite the hellish hours, have no lives (or will end up with no lives once they take the job). It would be much cooler to be a con man or something.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Yeah, that would be cool, but odds are that most of us are going to be working some dead end job for some shitty company that no one cares for. I really can't say what I WILL be doing or what I might be doing in the future, but chances are I am gonna hate my job.

Yeah, if it comes down to living my life in misery to make some money so I can get a shitty apartment or whatever or not having any money and being a bum, I'd just hop a train to Florida or hitchhike to California and be a beach bum.

I mean, money gives you freedom and all, but it's not worth getting up every morning feeling like shit and wanting to kill yourself to get it. You can get freedom in better ways.

not really? if you're driven enough and have the PIZZ-AZZ! you can probably do whatever you want. If not, go back to school until you can. Most people won't get a dream job as soon as they leave school, but if I ever had a boring job where I looked forward to the weekends, remind me to kill myself.

There's really lots of options out there. I'd probably say most of the people out there who do jobs they hate just for the money are doing it because they have a family to support. That kind of makes it bearable for them. If you're single and miserable with a job you hate, yeah, you suck.

I have to agree about getting a job you like is more important than pay. I decided to do that and am pretty happy with it so far. Most of what I like to do is cheap or free, so all I really need is food and a place to live. And insurance. :p It's a hell of a lot better than spending the majority of your waking hours totally miserable.

Well, I didn't read all the 3 pages of this thread, and it's probably for the same reason why I left college : lazyness. I had super grades and stuff, but people around meh sucked hard, and teachers were boring. I always dreamed of being a writer or something (dont judge my english, I'm a french writer) and you don't learn how to write or speak in school, its always the same basic french/english classes you get. I've found the ideal solution to this dead-end tho. I found a cool and well-paid job at the city hall : I make sure people pay their taxes :D and I'm finishing my college at night classes, which make it easier to take, cause full-time school is REALLY bad.

Right now as I am writing this message i'm at my job lol :D

Anotherwards, do you do things the same as the American IRS ((Internal Revenue Service)). I'm not quite so sure how Canada does their taxes ((Is it more like the french/european system, or?))

Canada is a socialist country so they have high taxes, isn't it like somewhere between 50-60 percent?

Bah, higher standard of living my ass, you don't have filthy Mexicans moving into the PRK being issued drivers licenses, sure you've got filthy French-Canadians and I'm sorry for that, but that's not the point, we've got homeless people because the weather is good, you don't have homeless because they all freeze to death. Okay that's not the point, I live in a place where when I turn 21 I can carry around a handgun to defend my quality of life, and my cat, Hell right now I can carry around a rifle. But that's not the point. I don't know what the point was anymore, it was my first day of school for the year and two of my classes have the two new teachers in them, one of them fresh out of college which could be a good or bad thing. It could be fun to ruin the poor girl.

Not quite right pooper, u pop out your "carte d'assurance maladie" and you are done, covered by the state.

And federal/provincial taxes are, together, around 54% for people with salaries 60k and over, 30% at 30k and I dont know the others. Me, I'm working for the city, and I collect the water/services taxes from shops.

And btw airsoft, we do have homeless people, and we do have guns. Only, we know how to use our guns, and we have shelters for the homeless.

And we arent filthy. Don't start flaming.

Neon Dingo wrote:I'm at that "crossroads of life," being 17 and all. Now's the time I have to figure out what the hell to do with my life after I'm done serving my time in <strike>prison</strike> high school.

Everyone is pushing me into different different directions, suggesting big name colleges, community colleges, and even the military. I know college has its uses, but I've been thinking about it all night and I've become more and more skeptical as to if it will really help me at all in life.

I know a lot of you have finished college or are currently in college and could probably give me some good suggestions.

I'm really interested in pursuing a career in game design and/or art-related stuff. I just don't know what the hell to do. I can draw well, I have pretty good ideas, but I just don't know where to get started. Everyone says "college is the answer."

I'm a very intelligent person, I practically take all advanced classes (which oddly enough does not entail intelligence, but I digress), so the difficulty level is not really of any concern to me.

I took the practice SAT a while back and got a 1100. That's not bad, but it's not good, either. I know I can get something like a 1400 if I study really hard. Getting a good score on the SAT is basically just beating the test, it's bullshit, really. All memorization of big words and basic algebra.

My grades are probably average. I have a 3.2 GPA but my class rank blows (147 out of 197, last I checked). I live really close to the University of North Texas in Denton.

My concerns:

- College is expensive, I am poor, probably in the lower-middle class, if not upper lower-class in the economic brackets of America. I am definitely going to have to get a loan, there's no way around it.

- I fear that if I don't go to a good university I'll be making websites and doing tech support for the rest of my life.

- I have probably $160 to my name right now so I have no idea how I'd be able to go anywhere but the nearby university and live with my parents.

- I don't want to be paying for this shit when I'm 40 doing a dead-end tech support job that doesn't require any skills I learned in college.

Ugh, it just seems so pointless to me. It seems to me like I can go to a library and read all day and probably learn more on my own than by being lectured by some old bastard who thinks he knows everything.

Courses such as English in college are pretty much impractical and pointless. Interpretation of poetry does not help me in life. I took a test to get out of my freshman English class in college, which is pretty nice.

To be honest, the only real reason I've entertained the idea of going to college is because I know it'll be a fantastic social experience. I'm pretty much anti-social at the moment because people around here suck, so I'll probably go crazy once I have the opportunity to meet non-sucky people that don't wear cowboy boots and drive Chevy pick-ups with a Confederate flag draped across the back window.
Don't let your lack of money stop you from doing anything ever. You don't have to know right now exactly what you want to do and who you want to be. Just make sure it's something you don't hate. College will probably be a good experience for you. Just don't let your friends or your parents pressure you into making a decision when you're not ready to make one.
Just because you can play "Stairway to Heaven", it doesn't mean you're any good at playing guitar.

Celluloid love is a grave digger and he enjoys digging up dead stuff and raping it.

Update: I am going to college at the University of North Texas majoring in 2-D Design and something about drawing? I don't really remember.

Anyway, I'm not paying for it because my dad randomly hit it big. Hooray for money, etc.

I'm only really going to college to meet people, to be honest. People around here are dick-asses.

I'll probably end up dropping out if it starts annoying me, but I figure it can't be TOO hard (Here's the part where people bitch at me and tell me how many papers they had to do). I mean, it's not like I'm majoring in something that requires any brain power.

Oh yeah, I don't have to take Freshmen English or Government because I tested out of them.

Anyway, go ahead and lock this thread or something because that's what usually happens to old threads.
