Interestingly enough, I still have the original books for the box set and the Citytech box set in my closet somewhere because every asshole I knew didn't want to play Battletech.
The Marauder was the first time I REALLY noticed a rip off from Macross. It only got worse when I bought the Robotech RPG from Paladium and got to look at all the mechs indepth.

That's too bad. I know my fondest memories of BT are from the era when only 16 'mech types were in existance. While the Technical Readout 3027 along w/City Tech was a nice addition that made for varied combat it still wasn't the same as when everything was still so fresh and new.Wolfman Walt wrote:Interestingly enough, I still have the original books for the box set and the Citytech box set in my closet somewhere because every asshole I knew didn't want to play Battletech.
That came in quite handy, actually.Wolfman Walt wrote:The Marauder was the first time I REALLY noticed a rip off from Macross. It only got worse when I bought the Robotech RPG from Paladium and got to look at all the mechs indepth.
Marauder = Officer's Battle Pod, etc., etc., and we put BT miniatures to good use in a Robotech campaign I ran one summer. The later versions of the miniatures were changed here and there -- probably for intellectual property reasons -- but the early versions were practically straight out of the cartoons they came from.

I think FASA was sued by the Robotech creators. The end result was FASA having to "phase" out the Robotech designs or something along those lines.OnTheBounce wrote:The later versions of the miniatures were changed here and there -- probably for intellectual property reasons -- but the early versions were practically straight out of the cartoons they came from.

I remember that when I was first getting intrested in Battletech (back in Rise of the Crecent Hawks). You couldn't simply go and buy a mech you had to salvage it (or steal it from the arena). Then I didn't play any BattleTech games until MechCommander. Speaking of which, MechCommander 2 sucks comparitivly.OnTheBounce wrote:Personally, I'm of the mind that Battletech started to go downhill w/the 4th Succession War, when that whole "some faction manages to pull 2,000 'mechs out of its ass and no one had a fucking clue they existed" bullshit started and the spiral was intensified by the arrival of the clans.
If you have/can get your hands on a copy of the original rulebook you'll note that there were no 'mechs still in production and the Successor States all relied on battlefield scavenging/salvaging and dwindling supplies of Star League equipment to keep their patchwork armies in the field. Then things got changed so that a few 'mechs were still in production and spare parts were still being manufactured. Soon after that everyone and their grandmother had a 'mech production facility in their backyard...
Then I started playing the MechWarrior games and it seemed like every planet was either a 'Mech construction base or some experimental wizzbang weapons facility.
I'd love to play the BattleTech game one day. My friend dumped a ton of models on me and I have no use. I can't seem to get my hands on a copy of the rules. Local used bookstores never seem to have any.
My favorite clan was probably Wolf, Jade Falcon, or Ghost Bear.
After the plot went completely to hell with the clans just turning on each other for no apperant reason, the plot went even more haywire. The last I recall was that the Word of Blake was taking huge chunks of land, claiming dominance, the Inner Sphere was making mechs again (god knows how...) and even making mechs better than the Clanners (again with the god knows how). But yes. I loved the Inner Sphere warring, then up into the clan invasion. Kerensky was my hero. I mean seriously, he just said "Fuck that" to the civil war, grabbed 90% of the military and left. It made me smile.
Edit. Would that "phase out" happen to have coincided with the Clan invasion? As I recall that was when the mech designs radically changed.
Edit again. Elementals = awesome. They don't quite count as a battlemech, but still. Who wouldn't be scared to see an eight foot tall man in powered armor tearing chunks of plate off of your limbs and frying your internals with a laser strapped to their arm.

Hah! So I'm not the only one who played that game. That was the thing that got me interested in Battletech since I thought it was the most awesomest game ever for my Comodore 64. Then I found out that it was an actual game and became more interested.Stainless wrote:I remember that when I was first getting intrested in Battletech (back in Rise of the Crecent Hawks). Interesting to note, that was my first actual RPG (I don't count Sword of Fargo), I was like 6 when I played it so giant Robotech thingies was teh kewl.

At the end after opening all those damn doors in the weapons cache you get to the HPG map room. The manual had the order in which planets you're ment to send to (you've got about 20-30 odd planets on this thing). I ended up just DLing a manual myself, but I didn't have a clue on where to find this info till my brother hazarded a guess about it being on the back of the manual.
The thing I liked about BattleTech was the descriptions in it. I still cycle through all the weapons in the shops to read their descriptions.
Besides Kurita > Clans.
