Ranting
Alright, this is where I start ranting about the education system, and how bad it obviously sucks. I don't know who's in charge over what we learn, but I have learned absolutely nothing in school after eighth grade or so. My high school consists of a landslide of drug-addicted, stupid, lazy kids, and they never want to learn anything. Our curriculum is bad. I feel like each year, I am running around in the same sick cirle, learning nothing. In order to learn anything, I'd have to go to advanced placement classes, but I hear it's only more work and you never learn anything. What is this country coming to, letting it's children get a watered-down education, graduating high school lacking intellect? Certain states have standardized-esque tests to see if you can graduate high school. The thing is, the passing margin is super low, so it's like everyone could pass.
So, what do you guys think on this? Am I right? (Well, of course I'm right, I'm not a moron...)

Move to another state / don't suck. The only excuse I ever had for not learning in any of my classes was laziness. And my senior math class - pre-calc - was the only one that ever happened in, because I played tetris on my graphing calculator instead of paying attention.
Either you're incapable of paying attention to what you're supposed to be learning, the students around you are being too distracting, or your school really does suck. The first one is easy to remedy, just start paying attention. <_< lol. The second isn't easy to remedy so you're screwed, unless you get into AP where there are other people willing to learn. If your school really does suck go to another one, or go to another state where you can get a real education. They'll beat you in the job market anyway![icon_mrhappy :D](./images/smilies/icon_mrhappy.gif)
And, as far as standardized tests, I donno what you've heard but here in New York we've got standardized tests for everything - and the passing rate is extremely low. Every year, in math especially, something like 20% of the kids who take it actually pass. It definately culls the retards, all it does though is keep them from getting a "regents diploma" which allows them to hit college pretty early, and makes them do vocational training. Which is probably a good thing, since people of that calibre should be doing vocational training instead of higher level thinking, yeah?

Generally, the reason why you don't feel like you learned anything is because you either A:) Suck (you failed Alg. I didn't you?) B:) Cheated through highschool like I did or C:) The subject matter is something you don't use enough in day to day life so really you DID learn it, you just aren't applying it. As for the education system, I'm proposing you go to an American highschool. Well yea, US highschools aren't exactly well known for great education, however US colleges are considered to be amongst the worlds best, so just wait until then. Think of highschool as "College Lite".
Edit: Also believe it or not, the passing rate for those standardized tests aren't that great. I got in the top 5% of California in 9th grade and in the top 10% of the US subsequently afterwards. Now with as dumb as I am, that means theres a good many more dumber people out there, meaning they had to fail those tests.

Harriers for the cup.
Where do you live? Try a private school or homeschooling, if your parents are smart. Judging by Slavemaster, it'll turn you nicely into a well-read asshole. As for the Advanced Placement classes, you might as well try 'em. I've taken my share of them, and most don't make any difference, but they tend to attract gifted teachers, so there's a chance you might have a good time.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.
I feel jipped - they built my campus with riot proofing in mind. The dorms are split up and have concrete spiral staircases that makes it difficult to get a large group through, and at "choke points" around campus they'll put barriers, the kind to "keep cars from coming in". Just to make it tougher for them hippie kids. Ha - only the center for the arts has easily accessable open area around it, probably just left it open to keep them happy.

School is real easy, really, if you just bother to listen at the class and pay some attention to your homework as well. I've gotten straight A's from classes/subjects that 90% of the people say have a real bad teacher. But hey, it seems those teachers somehow used telepathy and shit to send the right answers to me that I could write on the answer sheet.
It's mostly about your attitude towards studying. Seen people with an IQ of a boot to manage through High School/Senior Secondary without much of a problem. You just have to take it seriously, but you don't need to be an Einstein to do well.

Ha, a nearby college, Evergreen, was actually built for the intended use as a prison, but after it was completed they decided it would serve better as a college, so it is this huge, hulking, stalwart concrete structure. I would imagine it would be mildly intimidating to go there the first few weeks.SuperH wrote:I feel jipped - they built my campus with riot proofing in mind.
