As the population is slowly infected in crowded populated areas ( 3 day infection time ), in the end it doesnt really matter how slow moving they are. In dawn of the dead, the infection had spread quite a bit, and no one really noticed untill California had been overrun. Hospitals were probably overcrowded with patients suffering from weird sympthoms, and BAM! ... breeding ground for the infection.
As I recall, and as the trailer leads me to believe, Dawn of the Dead follows the completely unscifi plotline that hell is simply full ("When there is no more room in hell... the dead shall walk the earth...), and can't hold any more souls, so people reanimate on death.

None of the movies made an attempt to actually explain why the dead had risen. The only thing they offered was speculation. In the first one, it was a comet or something that a news caster speculated might have caused it. In Dawn, the black dude said it reminded him of something his grandfather told him as a boy. I can't remember if they said anything about it in Day of the Dead.

BTW, since someone mentioned Return of the Living Dead, that movie sucked much ass. The only thing good about it was it inspired two sequels which were more comedies than anything else.

Haha, yeah it did. I think it was made by HBO [or they produced it or something] if I recall. Horrible film, but there were some funny parts [though it completely made a joke of the whole zombie theme].

The first one was certainly a comedy as well, it was just slightly less slapstick than the sequals.

Possbily the dumbest looking scene in Dawn of the dead is when "Flyboy" assaults a zombie with a mallet ... he is supposed to miss or something and ends up throwing himself into the zombie ... Get the movie and FF about 20 mins in and have a good laugh :)

Actually, I saw it in the theater when it came out.

Is that the movie in which some guy throws a dynamite in his own car and blow his ass off?

I liked return of the dead, though it is a very bad movie. The end was pretty ^-^
