For Their Time/Nocturne
For Their Time/Nocturne
I recently pondered about the current state of the gaming industry, while reflecting on the Academy Awards disaster from sunday, and remembered the good things, far ahead of their time and the progenitors of their craft...
System Shock
Fallout
Exile/Avernum
Blood(Mindless Action)
Hitman(began realistic body physics IIRC)
They can still be enjoyed today, and set the course for the forms of interactive entertainment we (sometimes) enjoy today.
**
Anyone remember the game Nocturne from 1999? Had AMAZING graphics and a great atmosphere. It's still good today, and should be checked out... Better than Resident Evil.

Saw it somewhere, cheap box IIRC... It looked a bit shabby and for me those kinds of games always had to look good* (for some reason Silent Hill 1 was a lot more scarier back in time when all games looked like that), or at least average compared to other games published at the same time. So I don't think I could really bother with it these days.
*) purely my own, biased opinion
EDIT: talking about Nocturne, not Hitman. Hitman pWnZ.

Doesn't Hitman Contracts come out like this month or next month?
BTW, I think you're forgetting two important games, X-Com and Jagged alliance. X-Com really created the feel for massive squad based stradegy and spawned a whole genre of copy cats. Jagged Alliance perfected squad based combat and its affects can be felt in alot of games even today. Hell, its still often compared to alot of games.

Don't forget final fantasy and dragon warrior. I didnt play much of dragon warrior other then the first one, but I heard that the lastest games from this serie are good.
For final fantasy I think they are at least fun (FF6,FF7 and FF10 are good exemple), but they got there up in down, maybe it's time for square to create a new serie, even so that each final fantasy are independent of each other, except for ff X-2 wich where more a sides story then anything else.

WHAT?!? And you've actually played this game, right? Nocturne? That had to be one of the biggest cluster F's in gaming history.Anyone remember the game Nocturne from 1999? Had AMAZING graphics and a great atmosphere. It's still good today, and should be checked out... Better than Resident Evil.
Let's take a great idea, good story concept and blow it on the camera movement. This game, without a doubt, has the worse camara in 3rd person history. And the lock on feature, which was often dependant upon it, was also a total mess.
There is a reason that Resident Evil is one of the most sucessful horror game franchises in the gaming comunity.
Of course, this is just my opinion.
Sebastian, I must disagree. While some of the camera angles were terrible, I believe the atmosphere, the incredible graphics, the interesting story and the sound effects were top-notch as far as games go.
Resident Evil was bad, and I'll tell you why I think so.
The game begins off creepily enough, as the 3 cops run to the mansion, the lesser of two evils. Nice start. The game begins nicely, as the zombies you encounter are creepy enough(for it's time). Then come in the "Hunters", and from there the game's crap. I believe the last quarter of the game was incredibly lame, ditching the atmosphere of the mansion for the cliche of laboratories and such. Making a virus the reason for the zombifying of locals seemed like an excuse to make sequels. Ruined the whole experience for me. The new version's better, but not much.
Besides, Resident Evil takes place in ONE lousy, boring location while Nocturne takes you across the world. I'll say that the Chicago levels(besides the theatre) were a bit lame, but appropriatly lame. It was ahead of it's time and worth the 13.00 price tag.
Nabbed the game from www.chipsbits.com, mainly because I couldn't find another place to buy it from and couldn't be bothered to.

I'm sorry, but the only thing Nocturne was good for was using the instruction booklet to wipe my ass when I ran out of toilet paper. In a way, that's poetic justice.
Resident Evil is the reason they tried a game like Nocturne. If it wasn't for RE, survival horror might not have a following like it does today.
RE, the first game, wasn't the greatest, but it's sequel is still the best RE of them all in my opinion. The series hasn't captured the same coolness since.
Hey, you can like whatever you want. Not on my list of great games though ....
