[ -> Interview]
There's a Q&A over at GameBunny about the post apocalyptic MMORPG(I hate them, I do) Fallen Earth. Here's a bit about magic:

Will there be ?Magic? in the game?

James Hettinger: Arthur C. Clarke once pointed out that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. So, yes, there will be powers and abilities deployed in the game, but they?re the result of technology, engineering, mutation, rather than supernatural magic per se.

Then again, there's a reason people see stuff in the skies they can't explain as UFOs, aka science explanation, rather than as angels, which is the supernatural explanation these days.
Soft Science
Soft , So Sqeezeablely Soft, Science
St. P. ponders:
I "believe" ... that I first encountered "The Deity" as the great clock maker in all that "Tao Of Physics" new age mysticism, in the good ol' post Nam '70's.
No matter what side of the wall you are rooting for, "creation science" is a Trojan Horse that inseminates unknown, and therefore "mystical", agendas.
At - face - value it tweeks the nose of the Darwinists that have elevated their scientific theory to a pan theoism of "Law Of Nature".
AND THEN, other social sciences, other "soft" science types justify their tenure and book rights, by marketing their world view as "truth" by clothing their opinions as "fact".
----
Aside: Opinions are not defacto "facts". I owe these FO forums, at DAC and NMA, for hammering this observation into the miasma of my mind.
---
Millions or billions of dollars are "bet" on the 'facts' concocted by social scientists, escepially the 'business' disciples, when they sell their surveys and projections as a sure thing.
AND economists can be just as slippery when they support the investment industry, whose minions want to churn your 401 or IRA or other stock investment account, and charge you for PLAYING the Stock MARKET with your own money.
Mystics are everywhere, and the priests of mammon at I'play are betting on the console market, exclusively at this messianic moment, to divine their way to a .... profit.
Market'eering mavens gird their guessing in their divination of their own opinions, and prattle on about the "facts".
In a similar mindset, the progenitors of "Fallen Earth" are predicting there is 'gold' in them there MMORPG's and they can hook the fantasy crowd by ... by their collective Mojo's ... by selling Psionics, genetic mutation of species, 'The Creator's' latest digital watch derivation, and other Sci-Fi mysticisms, in one great on line post apocalyptic "Magic Moment" of a for-EVER questing "love in".
Will this pablum be more than chrome to garnish the server's bell'icose de jour or bell'adonna de jeuner? Will there be something more to care about than rat killing and cheese hunting in an open, or linear maze? Cheese hunting? E-point factories to buy more cup holders in your post apoca magical mystery SUV.
Who is the rat in this scenario? Which maze are we talking about? The subscriber that jumps through the prescribed virtual hoops to green-stamp earning glory? The smart money that MUST bet someone else's money, (the stockhoders and or private investors) on these Sony Wanna bee on line questings?
Another mystery, damn, is there no end to THAT maze ....
