The bacteria was not proven to be Martian. The Chinese are in space. Life does not strictly need water. Just 99.9% of what we know.

How can you say that "All life requires water" when you have only seen life that has required water?

There has to be some life out there that doesn't need water, somewhere. It's silly to make such an outright decision with such little evidence.

Life is just a chemical reaction. Life as the chemical reaction we know, requires water; no doubt about that. But who's to say that other, wackier chemical reactions that produce the same (or at least similar) effect.

Life as whe know it requires water. Life is a set of controled chemical reaction in wich internal entropy is reduced at the expense of external entropy. This means that you have an internal unstable organized system that keeps itself that way by consuming and degrading sources of energy. In the temperature, pressure, etc. ranges of our planet (almost certainly also in planets of the same type as Earth) this means that life must be based in carbon compounds that react with each other at temperatures that require water to make the reactions. The oxidation and reduction reactions that generate the energy necessary to sustain life are only possible in the presence of water at the energy levels of our planet.
Theoretically other possibilities exist. For example silicon is chemically very similar to carbon in the type of bonds it can produce with other atoms but it requires higer energy levels to alter those bounds. Silicon based life forms in planets with higer energy levels then Earth are theoretically possible.
But life as whe know it requires water and carbon.
And Kashluk is still clueless : )

Well perhaps there is some form of life far out there in our universe that doesn't require water to live. We can't prove or disprove that all life requires water to survive.

But in our real world, seeing as water allows life, maybe life did once exist on Mars, but was wiped out. A poetic vision, really: A precursor or omen for what is to come for our planet...

If Kennedy was still around, people would be living on the moon, if not Mars already.

But the truth is...People, the general public at least, don't really care about space anymore..I remember watching my first space launch as a kid and saying "wow....let's watch cartoons." I also remember hearing Reagan's "Star Wars" defense system and thinking that was really awesome..I guess I had conflicting views of space.

My dad, on the other hand, watched the very first launch, and he was thrilled. Back in the 60's, the general public really wanted to travel/live in space.

What happened? Any thoughts on why most people could give less of a rat's ass about space?

Hypothetically, life could be silicone based. Now, that is from what I know(which Ill admit is not as much as I should to comment on the subject), its a lot less likely, but still possible in some weird situation.
