Because the "people with low end machine who need to buy books" market has more selling potential since there are more people with crappy computers then the "I have the latest and greatest in computers" market. Take for example the sims which was released like what, 2 years ago? It ran basically on my state of the art machine from 1998 (Anotherwards it sucked) without any lag or problem at max resolution. The only thing I added was a Voodoo 3 to it because apperantly 3d cards didn't exist in 1998 and weren't considered neccesary? So the market should cater to stainless because he represents the average user thus the most people thus the most cash.
Harriers for the cup.
Then we stagnate....hmmm...yeah that sounds like a GREAT idea! Shall we go over the statistics of the avg. income of the average purchaser of videogames? Remember that whole statistics topic? Yeah Stainless isn't 'everyman' unfortunately, though he's everyman in my heart.
Actually, and this is where I'm puzzled, they ARE catering to Stainless...they having tons of performance customization in Farcry. So why the bitch'in? What you get on LOW settings is what you'd get either way if they made the game gorgeous on HIGH or not...meaning...would you not have them make the HIGH settings as to not taunt you? I mean you get to play the game and it would not look any better on your machine if they DEDICATED to making it just for Stainless's machine? So where's the loss here?
Cheers

Oh no I know...just saying that we are catering to our common denominator, since obviously this industry is rich with money. Obviously it can support itself and the Doom3's and the Half Life 2's made for the high end. If no one was buying the high end Nvidia or ATI cards, how would THEY stay in business?
The industry is very much surging forward with the technology without too much worry of the low end guys.
Cheers

Because the world should cater to my whims, and my whims alone.
I understand the requirement to "push the envelope" as it were, but I wouldn't mind seeing some games come out with the graphical grace of X-Com, but pack an indepth fun gameplay package.
The game is great looking (even in low), I admit. I'm a sucker for fancy lighting effects more then anything else. But sometimes it feels like it's a global conspiracy to bleed poor me of all my cash

Stainless, I dont know about the rest of your computer, but I can run everything on very high with a 9600xt and an average processor. Buying the latter will only put you back about $170us.
Completly off the current topic, but I got bored and compiled my adventure in the demo into a little photobook.

Bleh, that's practically 400 AUS. Unfortently huge wads of cash just don't fall from the heavens where I live.CloudNineGT wrote:Stainless, I dont know about the rest of your computer, but I can run everything on very high with a 9600xt and an average processor. xp 2000+
64mb GeForce 4 blah blah, can't remember what else it has tacked on it. El Cheapo Cardo (and the fact the ATI Radeon didn't like the system)
You can pick up one of those fancy AMD XP 2700+'s (2.167gHz) for like $100 US and an applicable motherboard for $60-80. The priciest part comes as the vid card, but selling your current rig for a few bucks, sell off some old games, maybe an old console or something if you have one... if you're big on reading sell off some old books. If you look around I'm sure you can come up witht he dough for a good (not SUPREME ULTRA MEGA GRANDMASTER NINJA +3 VORPAL FLAMING BURST) computer.
Personally I'm thinking of selling off some old stuff and making some extra money and cleaning up the place at the same time to produce needed funds for a new PC.

thats pretty obvious considering it costs over 300 for new graphics cards when my 32meg makes it look THE EXACT FUCKING SAME.ExtremeDrinker wrote:Hmm...I need a new processor and motherboard...I had forgotten that they're cheaper than a graphics card.

Yea, um it doesn't..I have a 128 meg vid card and I get texture thrashing for a texture level clearly made for 256 meg card. What happens is that textures can't get loaded onto the card fast enough, or too much in one cycle, and you get 'garbage', tearing and of course slowdown. On low settings sure, but it does not in any way look EXACTLY the same.
Plus as I said, this is a graphics card intensive game...it makes FULL use of DX9 so if you had to pick one, go with the vid card. Shaders are specific bits of code run on the vid card vs. the cpu, so all that fancy Doom3 shit and HL2 screens are showing off capabilities of fast video cards. More an more stuff can be tossed onto the card, so if yours is DX9 incompatible, or lower end, you will not have the horsepower for these games. better to have a faster vid card than cpu in these cases, including Farcry.
You can't qualify the statement 'looks the exactly same' since your speaking subjectively, but technically(and visually) there is a HUGE difference.
Cheers

Personally, I shop www.zipzoomfly.com because they are very reliable and have a good return policy.ExtremeDrinker wrote:Hmm...I need a new processor and motherboard...I had forgotten that they're cheaper than a graphics card.

ED, there is a demo out. It ran fine on mine and mine is similar, but using GeForce and AMD technology (GF4 Ti4600/1.73gHz AMD). Demo works dandy, actual game doesnt even start though : ( Makes me sad.
As for average, I'd say 1.7-2.0ghz is about it. Those'll run you about 100-125 USD for AMD XP's.
