Hellboy

Post by jetbaby »

Well, it came out, I saw it, I enjoyed it (though I have never read the comics so have no direct comparison). It is definately a leg up from the other comicbook related spew poured forth from Hollywood as of late. What do you all think?

I enjoyed it, although I have to say Ron Perlman made the movie more then anyone else. My parents even liked it and to quote my mom "Its the first time I've ever liked the devil."

I'm surprised you guys liked it. I thought it was pretty bad, even though I went into the movie with fairly high expectations. I think Guillermo del Torro is simply not a good director. His action sequences are pretty good, but Hellboy (like Blade II) fell short in all the other areas. Also, Selma Blair is a horrible actor. I didn't believe a single one of her lines.

Ron Perlman definitely pulled off a great Hellboy though.

Most of the critics seem to like it, saying pretty much what you guys have said (like, it's fresh and is a jolt of adrenaline into the tired old comic book movie premise, ohmygawd?), though the trailer makes it look trashy. I plan on seeing it anyway, if only for Perlman.

atoga will probably hate it since he has such godawful taste in movies, much like Franz. As a matter of fact, both of your opinions regarding movies can, as a rule of thumb, be discarded.

Hellboy is an awesome movie. There's a couple of little problems with it, but it's all generally so slick. Anyone who doesn't like it is probably an asshole or a liberal arts type. Probably both.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

You play rough, Spazmo, especially for someone who liked Snatch so much. I'm more of a movie jerk, though, while Franz is more of a movie idiot.

It was nothing special at all, just a run of the mill ok movie that I don’t want to see again. Perlmans performance was pretty good, but the entire movie failed to have any outstanding elements. Action was generally dull and unexciting, the romance was stupid and poorly acted (though not Perlmans fault) and any special effects were poor. You could almost see the cable dragging him in the subway scenes, and any CG was pretty bad, especially the fire.

To reiterate, a fine way to spend 2 hours if you have nothing to do. Oh and it failed to capture the Hellboy comics.

Run of the mill? No. If you put it to scale, this is far above average. Look at the complete shit that Hollywood is spewing out these days.

Can we even compare it to something that isn't out yet?

Of course we can, it just doesn’t make for a very accurate comparison. Truthfully Mask 2 could have been substituted with Daredevil, Gili, 2fast 2furious, exc. and the statement would be the same.

Ebert gave it the basics of an A-. He's really the only critic I trust any amount, and he's generally fairly hard to impress enough to give an A so either Columbian or Revolution Studios bribed him, or its definetly a pretty good film.

Ebert like Hellboy?! Whoa, I guess it is better than it seemed. He hated Full Metal Jacket - even though he's teh Kubrick fan. I'll have to rent it, either that or see it after Kill Bill V 2.

I have no interest in these comic-based films. I didn't like the Superman movies, I thought X-Men sucked, and Daredevil was absolute shit. I will admit I enjoyed Spider Man, though...I caught it on HBO one night when nothing else was on, and I was pleasantly surprised. The first and second Batman movies rocked ass...I don't count the countless other films as Batman.

I had to watch X-Men and X-Men 2 (Double Feature) at the theater with a bunch of my friends as sort of a "Triple Date" thing. I actually left the theater angry. I spent $30 on that?!? I didn't care for the stories, I didn't care for the cast..It just missed my vision of what the movies could have been.

Daredevil is stupid. A blind crime fighter with mad bat/radar sight..Bah..

Hulk. I'm not going to watch it. Ever.

Spawn...Spawn is a bad-assed character. I loved the animated series on HBO. I thought the movie was very weak. It had some pretty neat effects, but it didn't leave me wanting more. I was drunk when I saw this, and I still thought it was garbage.

Punisher.....I do like skulls...It might be worth renting..

Not really related as much as comical. My theater has this great sign on the outside that has a big picture of a pirate with an eyepatch and a hook and says "No pirates allowed." Some of you may recall me buying an eyepatch not too long ago, I'm going to see how good they are about this policy.

I licked Blade and Blade 2. I'll probably see it, then rent/download the REVENCH movies.

Ebert is an idiot, don't listen to him. The best critics are the New York Times / New Yorker ones (check the interweb), or just peruse around Rotten Tomatoes for a good average review, but by all means, don't listen to that idiot Roger Ebert.

you have obviously never read any x-men comics because the read the at the same rate the movie flows. i liked the x-men movies because the x-men heros can be rather entertaining at times.

i also liked spawn. it was damn good coming from a comic backround. the whole comic pretty much revolved around gory violence which is rather hard to depict in a time of shitty special effects.

the old punisher will be hard to beat. the new one looks like it has potential though. i figure, ill go watch it and attempt to not compare it to the old version. my main problem with it is that the new punisher looks pretty metrosexual compared to dolph lundgren's overpowering hardcoreness.
