Pagans started doing rituals for some reason, then the christian church came and for the purpose of easier conversion of the pagans to christianity, tacked their own meaning onto the existing holiday. This meaning became dominant for some time, but now nobody gives a fuck about either anymore and just pays attention to teh snazzy easter eggs and shit in shiny wrappings at the mall? End of story I guess. We can all become loving brothers in consumerism. Happy Easter.

Here's something a friend of mine wrote that explains it all pretty well.
P.S. - Generalized insults kick ass.Corpson wrote:let's say that there are a bunch of romans in the town square doing the roman dance. everyone is happy, dancing the roman dance. then, way in the corner, practically away from everyone else, is a christian, and he's doing the christian dance. the romans are all drunk and one roman happens to imitate the christian, so he starts doing the christian dance. then another roman sees the other roman doing the christian dance, so he starts doing the christian dance. after a while, everyone in the whole town square is doing the christian dance, following this same pattern. no one even remembers what happen to the roman dance, suddenly everyone is dancing the christian dance.
around spring time (vernal equinox?), the romans were mostly involved in courtship festivals.
the christians created easter and celebrated it around that time. think about the symbolism of the traditional easter imagery:
rabbits,
chicks,
eggs!
this was a time of fertility.
around summer time (summer solstice), many romans would get married. it was easier to heat water around the summer time for baths (people normally showered once a year). weddings would take place around this time because the bride could become clean. think about it, white=purity=cleanliness.
weddings would take place in cathedrals and everyone except the bride would still be dirty, so, needless to say, the catherdal would smell really bad, with you being the only clean one. with this, it was a custom for the bride to hold flowers next to her nose during the ceremony; not because it was nice and lovely, but because the whole, entire place stunk like roman ass-rot.
christians created "michael's mas" around this time (a commonly long-forgotten holiday).
what other holidays/events are around this time?
graduations, father's day...
around winter most of the romans were getting drunk from another festival they held so the christians made up "christ mas", then eventually everyone was dancing the christian dance.
the romans were usually so drunk and careless that they got themselves caught up in celebrating these holidays that have no part in their culture.
now here's where it gets interesting:
all right so today's valentine's day! what's today?
= 2/14
ok, now subtract 6 weeks from that, where do you end up?
=12/25
CHRISTMAS!!!
haha
ok, now back to valentine's day, 2/14
add 6 weeks on to 2/14, what do you end up with?
=5/15
mother's day
now add 6 more weeks on to 5/15,
what do you get?
=6/20
father's day.
what's around father's day?
=weddings, graduations...a lot of flowers given, received...
mother's day also involves a lot of flower sales...
certaintly easter involves flowers as well...
just as christmas does....
guess how long it takes to grow flowers?
....
.....
.....
.....
6 weeks.
now that's what i call productive resources...

Your friends math is abit off. Theres 52 days between Christmas and St Valentines day IE about 7.4 weeks.
To Mothers day its actually 13 weeks or 91 days as Mothers day is 3 Months from St. Valentines.
Even to fathers day its shorter then 6 weeks from Mothers day by about 5 days.
White has ALWAYS been a symbol of purity, not just to romans.
Didn't Zig just get done saying that Easter was created by Pagans, not by anyone else? What is there some sort of weirdo bizzaro multi-creation?
As such, I suggest your friend takes some basic math courses for he's not the sharpest needle in the haystacks.
P.S. Nihilism is a fools practice

when you think of easter, does it bring back that scene in mallrats when jay and silent bob kick the shit out of the easter bunny?
