IPLY CONF CALL DETAILS @RPGDOT

Post by Killzig »

[Company -> Update]

That special little man Dhruin at RPGDot posted these factoids he gleened from a listen at the 41 Minute Hate erm... investor conference call..

After listening to all 41 exciting minutes of Interplay's conference call, I can offer some first-hand details.

Interplay has traded all rights to D&D games, including Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale products (except for the existing back catalogue), for full ownership of the 'Dark Alliance' trademark. I'm not clear if future 'Dark Alliance' game will keep the 'Baldur's Gate' prefix. As reported, with no D&D rights future Dark Alliance games will be set in a new game universe that Interplay will devise. There was a hint that an adaptation of SPECIAL would be used for the ruleset. It's likely a new engine will be licensed.

On Fallout 3, Caen said "Fallout 3 is not actively being developed right now and we will have an announcement soon on that project". Later, several questions were posed by an investor. The exchange went as follows, starting with a question clarifying whether IPLAY would develop or publish Fallout 3:

Caen: We plan on publishing Fallout 3
Caller: Most likely it will be done through an external studio, correct?
Caen: Correct.

As you can see there is quite a bit of "wiggle room" here. There was no discussion about the likely studio (if indeed one has been selected) or the engine to be used. Later Caen was asked if Interplay would ever work with Obsidian to which he replied "That's an option, yes" but this was clearly an open statement and not meant to signify a specific relationship.

Finally, although reduced from 207 staff to 113, about 75 of those remaining are developers.

At least the investors are putting some pressure for Fallout 3, and thankfully none of the current dunder heads at IPLY are touching it.

The Evil Empire posted a column entitled "Interplay's Triumps and Tragedies" which almost reads like an obituary.

But some bleaker short term news appeared in a Form 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission today. In it the company noted a few problems it was facing: The company owes three months worth of rent on its Irvine, California headquarters and has been served with a Three-Day Notice to Pay Rent or Surrender Possession. If the company can't meet that deadline it will be forced to leave its headquarters and disrupt its business while it seeks a new location.
That gave me a hearty laugh, I wonder if Troika is looking to expand their offices, some more space just opened up. Read the full obituary over here. So what developer out there will take a check from a company that's three months overdue on their rent? Carsten?

As for what's currently going on at Interplay, someone very close to the company left me a rather cryptic message saying that Fallout 3 design documents were being turned over and stripped down for use on FOBOS2. Make of that what you will.

I for some odd reason won't be suprised if in FOBOS2 your racist black man or well endowed bitch wakes up in a jail and is chased by robots and crap.

I thought I read there won't be any FOBOS2, but rather a new action-rpg in the FO universe.

Maybe they turned both FOBOS2 and FO3's design docs to make FO:Dark Alliance or something?

Think they'll use BIS' half-finished Van Buren effort, or just start from scratch?

Probably start with Van Buren....I can't imagine Iply wanting to take time on something, even if they outsource the project.

They don't have the time, or the money, to make a new FO from scrath. And if they do we'll get another half-assed game with unfinished quests and shit.

If they dropped BG but kept DA, then it's a sure bet they'll be producing FOBOS 3 rather than Fallout 3.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Ha, ha, a "stinking pool of vomit" by any other name is still a "stinking pool of vomit"?

No way. That's what we have marketing for.
