Speech and audio

Post by Retlaw83 »

How do you play an audio file to accompany windowed NPC speech in FoT? I can't seem to get it working. I have the speech node, and I have the mp3 with the spoken dialogue, but I don't know how to get the bastard to say the lines.

I think you have to make sure the sound file has the same file name as the speech node. The extension will be different obviously but the rest of the name should be the same.

I figured that. And that's what I did. I think my problem is that the MP3 is not in the correct folder.

Yes there is some very complicated rules about the correct folder path. I think this is edited in the campaign editor or some text file. Im not sure. I believe someone wrote a tutorial or such on it a while back but I can't recall the details.

I know the sound file info is not edited in a mission's speech.txt.

I know it should go in a subdirectory of locale/missions, (at least that's how the loc_mis*.bos files are setup) but I don't how the game determines what folders reference what missions.

I think the folder name just has to be the same as the mission name. So if your mission name was "retlaw01.mis" then the folder name would be "core/locale/missions/retlaw01/". For much of the game this is the way it works, so I wouldn't be surprised. One thing to avoid in creating file names is to avoid using spaces and keep everything lower case. You can use an "_" in place of a space.

Tried this using both the mission name as refferred to in missions.txt that the campaign uses and using the map name. No results.

You could try using one of the game's default dialogue sound files first. That way you'd know when you have it right, and not have to worry about whether or not your sound file is compatible until you have it right.

Its always best to eliminate, as many things that could be wrong, as is possible.

BINGOOO!

Despite the fact that the speech.txt file is loaded into and then incorporated into the level, audio files must be stored in the same directory as the speech file for the game to reference them.

My supply guy, voiced by me, now says his lines like a good little trooper.

Now I just need to dig up a female voice actor to augment my friend and myself and I'll be set.

Thanks for the help!

BTW, I noticed this when looking at loc-mis_A.bos, because something all the audio files had in common was that they were in the same folder as the speech files.

I now have my supply sergeant and bartender speaking. Now all I need to do is coble together some mission briefings and my commander can speak, too.

Next challenge is finding a female to voice the one character. If I were still up at college it would be no problem, but summertime is another story.
