Zombies take over the world
<strong>[ -> Preview]</strong>
In keeping with DAC's policy to post more on post-apocalyptic movies and other media, I thought I'd mention <b>George Romero</b> is making a fourth, and final, zombie film called <a href="http://www.freezedriedmovies.com/film.php?id=178">Land Of The Dead</a>. This follows on from his previous classics, starting with <b>Night Of The Living Dead</b> in the '60s, <b>Dawn Of The Dead</b> in the '70s (which was recently remade) and <b>Day Of The Dead</b> in the '80s. All three are great horror movies, all are linked and the fourth film should wrap up all the unanswered questions raised in the previous films about humanity's fate.
<br>
<br>What has this got to do with an apocalypse? <a href="http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/">Bloody Disgusting</a> has an <a href="http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/index. ... ">overview and press release</a>:
<br>
<br><blockquote>In Romero's new pic, the zombies having taken over the world and those left alive are confined to a walled-in city that keeps out the corpse corps. Anarchy rules the streets, with the wealthy insulated and living in fortified skyscrapers. Drama revolves around a group of scavengers who must thwart an attempt to overthrow the city while the dead are evolving from brainless slow-moving creatures into more advanced creatures.</blockquote>

<br>Zombies taking over the world sounds pretty apocalyptic to me. There's also an <a href="http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/display.c ... terview</a> at <a href="http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/">Ain't It Cool News</a> with Romero, including more details on the setting that sound like they could be in a <b>Fallout</b> game:
<br>
<br><blockquote>...most of the film's action is outside the city. The humans have this big armored vehicle they go out in loaded with big guns and shit. They go to all these nearby towns and hit the supermarkets and liquor stores for supplies. It's a little different than the previous films where the living would go out scouting for any survivors. They had enough supplies in those films. In this film, this is their way of life. They have these hard-ass guys that are volunteers and willing to take the risks.</blockquote>
<br>
<br>I'm looking forward to this. Though I don't quite understand how, given how slow and stupid those zombies are, they manage to bring the world to its knees. Perhaps people mistake them for <a href="http://www.mcdonalds.com/">McDonald's</a> salespeople until it's too late.

Night of the Living Dead has always been my favorite. It was filmed right down the road from me, and the reporter at the end was an actual reporter for Channel 11 news in Pittsburgh.
As part of JROTC in high school, we used to put wreathes on the tombstones of veterans buried at the cemetary used in the movie. Also, since the town is virtually insignificant in the grand scheme of things, the elderly who have lived there all their lives recount being zombie extras as one of their more fun memories.
Ah, the magic of Hollywood.

The original 1978 version of Dawn of the Dead is still my favorite of the series. But, meh, this is pretty old news. True story though, in addition to Land of the Dead, Romero is also currently in production of Diamond Dead, a horror musical, which can be found here.
Its a very fan friendly film, as Romero is taking the input of the fans and actually implementing fan ideas into the film. Tres cool.

Re: Zombies take over the world
It works like this. It may take a while to load, but that's a ZOMBIE INFECTION SIMULATION written in Java. While it doesn't cover every aspect, it's close to the point.Mr. Teatime wrote:Though I don't quite understand how, given how slow and stupid those zombies are, they manage to bring the world to its knees.
In the case of a zombie outbreak, there's hospitals, which have morgues. Big city ones can have a decent amount of dead in them. You end up with a big bunch of zombies getting up and lunching on anyone near them. Each one they lunch on is going to become a zombie. Hospitals are filled with weakenned people because of disease and other things, so they're just one big turning ground.
The cops will be called, of course, but they're not going to have a damned clue as to what's going on. They're going to try to match their use of force with the level of violence, which means physical force or some kind of pepper spray. Long story short, those cops will be in some trouble dealing with the first wave until they figure something out. A few cops will probably die, most will retreat, but you end up with more zombies.
Then you're going to have a lot of zombie related accidents at first. Zombies are going to walk out in front of cars, because they're stupid, and the driver is going to think, "Oh shit! I hit someone." They get out and check on the person, they get bit. Or people will swerve off the road, hit a tree and wind up a zombie. They're basically going to see what appears to be humans doing something brainless and accidents will result from that. The more accidents, the more zombies generated.
Once the news gets out what is actually happenning, you'll have wide spread panic which means more accidents. Inexperienced people trying to take out some zombies and taking out their buddies, and so forth.
The fact they're slow and stupid only leads to complacency, which only results in more accidental deaths from zombies.

I really don't care for the "evolving zombies" idea, personally. MY initial reaction to it is unfavorable. If it's going to be a continuation of the trilogy, then there damned well shouldn't be dead people walking around that eventually change in to something new. Day of the Dead was all about military research on the zombie issue, and they even said that the zombie thing would run it's course around four years or so because they were still decaying, but at a slower rate.
For the zombies to evolve in to new things, you'd have to have some kind of living deal going on with them, cells dividing and such. I'm not so sure I'm cool with them going from walking dead who are decaying to something new and different because that's not what they are. Why would they suddenly go from animated dead to mutants? Meh. They're dead, they're decaying, run with it.
I'd rather they use his walled city idea, and stick with the principle of the origiinal trilogy monsters.
