Canon or not canon, that is the question.

Post by PsychoSniper »

[ -> Update]

Well, I emailed Bethesda's PR man, Pete Hines with a rather simple FO3 question and got a not so simple response. (posted with his permission)

Here's the email I sent, and his response.

Hello Mr Hines, I'm known as PsychoSniper on the FO fansites NMA and DAC.

I have a simple yes no question.

Does Bethesda intend to keep to the canon storyline as established on
FO 1/2 and the FO bible ?

We'll let folks know what we're up to when we've done a little more work on
the game. Right now we're working on putting together the team. It'll be a
while before we're ready to start talking about the game.

So they dont even know basic things like whether or not to keep it canon yet ? Disturbing.

What's next, not knowing whether or not to make it post apoc ?

Thats a bit of mouth-stuffing there, i think. He's simply saying they still haven't gathered the entire team that will work on the game, so it would be somewhat obvious to infer that, if the team isn't together yet, they haven't started making research or decisions regarding what will be made.

EDIT: Also, you find it disturbing that they haven't made any annoucement regarding an adherence to the canon... but every Fallout fan has a different idea of what canon is, or should be. Saying they would adhere to it would be nearly the same as saying nothing, because merely saying they would do so would not give you any guarantees that they'd use what you, me, or anyone else would consider canon.

I am prepared to give them a chance. We don't have any info to decide either way really....

EDIT: and I tend to agree with roleplayer on this... they can't say anything, because they haven't got anything to say

I`m bored with this issue, nevertheless. Good mail Psycho anyway.

That probably was a bad idea to just up and post his email on the front page. He'll probably never talk to you again. At least, he won't talk to you candidly.

Was Van Buren canon storywise?

I would assume so, but would defer to those whom know more.

I agree with Saint. You can't make any sudden moves with these people, or they'll scurry off like rodents.

The FO Bible has some good parts, but I wouldn't like it to be seen as the de facto bible. MCA wrote some dubious stuff, like the 1 car to 200 people thing.

Above all, I'd like to see the original Fallout held up as the example. Fallout 2 keeps to the original canon decently but it's a bit.. leaky.

Christ, stop bugging Bethesda. You could ask one of their guys his name and he'd go 'too early to say'. They're just not going to answer any queries at all until they have something concrete.

I don't put much stock in the Avellone's bible. In one part I read it said ghouls were a product of overly radiated people dying, and in another it said Harold became a ghoul when exposed to trace amounts of FEV after passing out in the military base during his excursion with Maxson.

Well... Avellone is kinda right there, except that Harold isn't a ghoul, really, he's just something else. Regular ghouls are the result of massive radiation exposure (not death, though, death just kills you). Some forms of FEV exposure (Harold wasn't dipped, probably just got hit by fumes) could potentially create something ghoulesque since FEV is really unpredictable.
