More in PC Gamer UK

Post by Mr. Teatime »

<strong>[ -> Editorial]</strong>

<a href="http://forum.pcgamer.co.uk/">PC Gamer UK</a> have more on the <b>Fallout</b> series in their latest (<b>September 2004</b>) issue. They have a 'top 100 PC games of all time' feature, where they put <a href="http://www.interplay.com/fallout2">Fallout 2</a> at number 53. Here is the complete quote for its entry:
<br>
<br><blockquote>It's the sense of humour that draws us back year after year to Fallout. Few games make us laugh, even fewer reduce us to stitches. Fallout still manages it, yet combines it with deep, fascinating roleplay in a post-apocalyptic world.</blockquote>
<br>
<br><a href="http://www.interplay.com/torment">Planescape: Torment</a> is also on the list at number 8. There are some dubious decisions, such as <a href="http://www.bioware.com/games/shadows_amn/">Baldur's Gate 2</a> at number 10, and <a href="http://www.morrowind.com/">Morrowind</a> at number 29. Hmmm.

Strangely, the 'humour' of Fallout 2 never draws me back in due to it being very puerile and basically, not very humouristic at all.

It surprises me how every lists of best games or whatever choose FO2 instead of FO. The latter seems completely ignored by everyone.

Its due to the fact the original Fallout had a disturbing lack of hookers and recreational drugs.

I actually played FO2 before ever trying FO1, so my fondest memories are embedded in FO2.
And, since haveing played FO2 so much, when I started on 1 everything was really really easy. I dunno whether FO2 is harder or I was just imagineing things.
using the highest combat difficulty tends to spie things up though.
WIthout the combat difficulty setting I'd have stopped playing long ago.

I dunno I though FO1 was much harder. Maybe because I was younger when I played it.

I replayed FO2 a lot more than FO1. You can complain about the setting or the style compared to the original, but the game was a lot bigger and there was a lot more to discover, which kept me coming back.

That's true. I just wish it was fully completed before they released it.

Is that Abbey mod on NMA worth it?

I don't get where the whole 'black humour' thing came from. I don't think of the Fallout games as particularly funny. I think the exaggeration of the presence of 'black humour' and a misunderstanding of what black humour is on Cuevas' part led to the character of Cyrus in FOBOS.

Yeah. It's not a humor game, is it?

I guess average people are trying to give the time-mixing 50's feel of Fallout some kind of a name they can comprehend. They don't understand it, much like black humor, so they call it that.

Maybe?

Well, I'm currently re-playing FO2 and I'm surprised how many 'humor' is in it. Every damn person you speak to is an easter egg.

Strange I never noticed it earlier.

No, hookers know they're getting screwed.

And they make money from it, too.

I don't think FO has any black humor. The humor is more dry/sardonic/satirical.

Fallout 1/2 have humour, to a certain extent, though I would not claim that humour is the most obvious attraction of either game. Additionally, I do not see the point in debating the classification of the themes of humour present, or how they might be misunderstood. Regardless of the label given, humour is present - but ultimately individual interpretation wins. I say let them decide for themselves, free from premature bias and conclusions that are likely not their own. :drunk:

Yeah, but Fallout is primarily a serious game. When I think of a funny game, I think of Secret of Monkey Island or of Sam & Max Hit the Road, never Fallout.

I really wouldn't consider Full Throttle one of the comedy adventure games. It was light hearted sometimes and funny in parts, but "funny" isn't the first thing that comes to mind for that one.

I think the original Monkey Island games are the funniest of all time.
