Van Buren Interview: Sean K Reynolds
[ -> Interview]
I got a chance to send some questions to Sean K Reynolds, former lead story designer for Van Buren and got some interesting answers and info on what VB was going to be like.

19. If you had the opportunity to legally arrange anything at all unpleasant, but non lethal, for Herve Caen for cancelling VB what would it be?

Well, the guy still owes me money, so how about I just suggest he get locked up in a room with the Fallout fans for a while?

Go here to read the whole thing.
And good luck on getting your paycheck from Herve Sean, meant in a serious/nonscartastic way.

This is precisely why Fallout 3 would have sucked. When you have one of the BEEG DEZINE GOUYZ thinking Fallout takes place 73 years from our present day, you're going to have an amazing amount of canon issues. I guess he missed all the old vacuum tube tech all over the place, which should have been a pretty big clue that Fallout takes place in it's own setting which ain't the real world.Sean K. Reynolds wrote:Space stations? There are space stations in orbit right now; in the 73 years between now and the bombs dropping you'd think that there would be continued research in space exploration and habitation, especially as modern rockets don't even use petroleum fuel so the gas crisis of the mid-21st century wouldn't even apply to them (other than the need for petroleum to make plastics and such, which can be made from recycled plastics quite easily). This also isn't a bio-dome sort of space platform where you have a bunch of scientists living up there like a bunch of dirty hippies, it's ... well, let's just say it's a military platform, and it doesn't hold troops.

For the record, I don't have a problem with how Van Buren was going. Lots of you do, and they're legitimate complaints, but I am fine with artistic license of the new devs taking it in a slightly different direction.
I have problems when issues are forced on them for no other reason than cynical ones, such as the hybrid combat system.

It's a debatable subject. There is high tecnhology in the FO universe (some weaponary), mixed with primative vacuum tubes. And if the source is the perceptions in the 50s, well wasn't space flight and 'mars attacks' and stuff big in comic books around then? I'm not sure if it was a naive fear the way the 'there could be a nuclear strike' was, though.
But IMO it doesn't really matter, I'm happy with artistic license within the setting.

And guess what those were the comps at the station. But the really interesting thig to discuss is this:Spazmo wrote:Sure there is. For one thing, the lack of miniature computers. Did you notice how even dumb terminals in Fallout were as big as weed stoves? You won't get too far into space with machines like that.

Comedy gold, any sugestions on what we could if we had that chance?

Hmm, this tweaked my curiosity a little. How big is the PIPBoy? I always thought it'd fit quite nicely into a medium sized pocket.Spazmo wrote:Sure there is. My apologies in advance if this has been answered.
