Paranoia LIVES

Post by Saint_Proverbius »

[Community -> Update]

For those who remember the old school PnP tabletop game, Mongoose Publishing has re-released the venerable PnP RPG in an updated, hardback form called Paranoia XP which should be available August 19th, 2004. What is Paranoia? Well, it's basically set after a nuclear war where humans live in a big dome thing called Alpha Complex, which is controlled by a computer. Well, I'll let this explain it:

YOU ARE IN ERROR. NO ONE IS SCREAMING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

The Computer is happy. The Computer is crazy. The Computer will help you become happy. This will drive you crazy. Being a citizen of Alpha Complex is fun. The Computer says so, and The Computer is your friend. Many traitors threaten Alpha Complex. Many happy citizens live in Alpha Complex. Most happy citizens are crazy. Which are more dangeroustraitors or happy citizens?

Rooting out traitors will make you happy. The Computer tells you so. If you are not happy, The Computer will use you as reactor shielding. Being a Troubleshooter is fun. The Computer tells you so. Do you doubt The Computer, citizen? Troubleshooters get shot at, stabbed, mangled, incinerated, poisoned, stapled, blown to bits and accidentally executed. This is so much fun many Troubleshooters go crazy. You work with many Troubleshooters. They all carry lasers. Aren’t you glad you have a laser too? Won’t this be fun?

Stay alert! Trust no one! Keep your laser handy!

You're a troubleshooter. Troubleshooters hunt down mutants and members of secret factions, because those are treasonous things. By the way, you're a mutant in a secret faction. So is everyone else. Your job is to kill them. Their job is to kill you. You all work together to do the missions of the computer.

Probably the coolest PnP role playing game ever made.

Thanks for the info, p4x!

Ah, good old Paranoia PNP. Those were some good times. TREASON!

I don't get how they adopted it to a game, though. Weird.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

There's a pretty neat online chat/PnP client for Paranoia for those who wanted to check it out. You can find it on Paranoia Live, one of the newer fan sites for the game. Here's a bit from a session that Exitium, me, and Pat were in earlier today:
  • Prov-R-Bius-1: If the weapon in question displeases Friend Computer, I will humbly give it up, even though it makes me happy.
    Jazz-U-RRR-1: What's that mean?
The Computer: You may give it up if you wish
    Prov-R-Bius-1: I'm happy either way!
Nory-U-BEE-1: It means he is accusing fc of treason!
Nory-U-BEE-1: He suggests that FC may force him to give up something that makes him happy!
Jazz-U-RRR-1: Prov feigns happiness. He is actually sad.
    Prov-R-Bius-1: I'm happy either way!
    Nory-U-BEE-1 . o O ( hmm. a spoof exi... )
    The Computer: Prove it, Jazz
Jazz-U-RRR-1: It is the way he speaks.
    Prov-R-Bius-1: See me smiling?
    Jazz-U-RRR-1: It is forced.
    Prov-R-Bius-1: :D
    Prov-R-Bius-1: Happy!
    The Computer: He is happy
The Computer: You are a liar, trying to decieve me
    * Nory-U-BEE-1 stands next to prov *
    * Jazz-U-RRR-1 inspects Prov to see if he is actually happy and accidentally drops Prov's multicorder during the search. *
    The Computer: ROBOT DOGS
Jazz-U-RRR-1 has been visited by the reaper-bot.
Yes, Exitium died a lot that day.

Great game.

Incidently, developed/written by Ken Rolston, Bethesda's lead designer. :)

Oh, shit. I hope it wasn't the guy who asked me the other night in the Paranoia XP Q&A what I thought of Bethesda since I worked for RPGCodex and was doing stuff here. Then again, all I said was that I wanted my $50 back for Morrowind.

Oddly enough, I don't see him in the credits for 2nd Edition Paranoia, which was the bestest evar, but he worked on the original as well as the MUCH HATED 5th Edition Paranoia.

Anyway, anyone that worked on developing Paranoia can't be all bad.

Know what you mean. Aside from having a good time modding, most of that game was horrid. :)

You're right about 2nd Ed, definate best. And as far as I know, he was one of the main designers on 1st and 2nd Ed. though. Plus, wrote a ton of supplements for paranoia, and contributied a few bits and pieces to 5th ed and to this new one.

I'm hoping. Dude's seemingly funny as hell. And in just the right 'slightly twisted/dark' way fallout needs.
