Spazmo, if you can find justification in spending (and wasting) $260 million dollars and a half-decade to figure out exactly how old the fucking sun is because "four point five billion years" isn't close enough, then shit, talk to NASA and send some money my way, I'm sure I can find better projects for it. Scientists might have been able to find out what exactly the sun is made of, which is pretty damn useful. Off the top of my head, since the sun is an immense nuclear reaction done mainly with hydrogen and helium, it could probably be applied to nuclear power generation here on Earth. And besides, it's asinine to expect someone to predict what we'll learn. We don't know--that's why we want to find out. Could anyone have predicted that Kennedy pushing for NASA to land a man on the moon could eventually have led to the modern computing revolution? I don't fucking think so. Necessity is the mother of invention. Before we invent and properly develop anything as stunning as computers again, we'll need a hell of a necessity. Space exploration worked in the past. Who knows what kind of useful stuff we'll invent because it's needed on spaceships? Faster than light travel? A unified field theory? Quantum physics finally settled? Anti-gravity whatsits? Hell, anything.

ANY knowledge about the universe we live in is worth the trouble. I fucking hate assholes who say the US should cut NASA's budget to pay for social programs. Assholes, cut MILITARY spending for social programs. Space exploration is way more important than either one. That's right, fuck the poor, we need to get back into space.

KNowing how old it is is important in the long run, it lets us know how much time we have before it burns out. Although by that time we'll all be dead.
