The U.S. assault weapons ban has had virtually no impact on the amount of violent crime carried out with such weapons.

So, might as well let law-abiding citizens get them if they're willing to through all the paperwork.

well, the way I see it. I havent looked into any numbers or anything, but If its legal to have them, more ppl will have them, and then probably some will be stolen and find their way onto the black market...

I'm not really into this gun thingy, maybe thats why I think its stupid to allow such guns.
they're really not needed... by anyone. (excpt for criminals and coppers and military)

Well, I think airsoft guy explained it pretty well on the Guns & Ammo thread... If I understood correctly, this ban of "Assault" rifles really has to be called with the quotes, because the law didn't forbid guns with full-auto fire, it forbid guns that *LOOKED* threatening. Imagine a normal assault rifle modified into a semi-auto (maybe hunting) rifle. You couldn't have it, because it still *LOOKED* like a full-auto weapon, even though it wasn't.

Yeah. Maybe I got it all wrong, but if this is/was the case, then the removal of this ban didn't really loosen any gun laws, unless getting rid of idiotic rules goes for loosement.

You're right Kash.
what possible use could civilians have for assault rifles?
Hunting. A M16 derivative fires the same caliber of ammo, 5.56x45mm, or simply a souped up .22 round. That is useful against rabbits, foxes, small deer, etc.

Having a semiautomatic weapon with a high rate of fire (as compared to a varminting bolt action rifle anyways), is a good thing, for if you miss on your first shot, don't you want a quick follow-up shot to bag that bunny?

You got it right Kash. The whole point of this law was to serve as a first step leading to more restrictive gun bans later. Anti-gun organizations said as much at the time. Ironically passage of this law inflamed the pro-gun community so much that it lead to the Democrats losing control of the U.S. House and Senate two months later, including the incumbent Speaker of the House losing his seat.

Have you ever seen a rabbit get hit with military-grade ammo fired from an M16?

End result is that the bunny explodes, or at least is damaged enough to be unusable for meat.

Yeah, usually rabbits are hunted with shotguns.
At least around here they are.

bunnies are best hunted with sticks. especially the human ones...
why does one hunt bunnies anyway?
can't be much food on a bunny... and purchasing one would prolly be quicker.

Hey, maybe they'll let me buy that boss L.A.W., so I can..you know, go hunting with it. Seriously, I'm confused about why anyone would want anything like an assault rifle in their home for anything other than collectors purposes. Unless you're one of the militia nuts, I say give them all the guns they want, maybe they'll blow their heads off. I'm not anti gun, I'm anti-dumbass. There should eb an I.Q. check to buy a gun, follwed by a psyche evaluation. then someone could take away Hestons guns, I loved him in POTA, but seriously, that man is creeping me out. I don't even want to thing about how he c leans his gun barrels. Personally, I've always been a knife man. See, here the thing, you can survive most gun wounds, but a kinfe wound? Always nastier, always harder to treat. Keeps it personal. If you're not afraid after a bit of blood. And after my....well, I know about blood, and bone for that matter...Anyway. I'm not saying you shouldn't own a gun, I'm just disturbed by people owning assualt rifles. I don't care if you have the biggest damn handgun on earth, or the largest calibre hunting rifle around, but automatic...that's just disturbing.

The law was pointless, it was totally cosmetic, nothing more. Besides, if you want to solve the gun problem, here's what you do:

Make all guns pink

Everyone knows no self-respecting criminal would commit a crime with a dorky, girlie looking gun.

Oh, and make it illegal to repaint them.
Feel safe now?
Just a thought....
