Earth's Backup Plan

Post by Mad Max RW »

<strong>[ -> Editorial]</strong>

Ever wonder how we'd repopulate Earth after most life on it was destroyed? Me neither. But <B>Dr. Bernard Foing</B> of the <a href="http://www.esa.int/esaCP/index.html">European Space Agency</a> has the solution. His plan involves the Moon and inspiration from a guy called Noah. <A HREF="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3635972.stm" target=_blank>BBC News</a> is on the case:<blockquote><em>Dr Foing is head of Europe's Moon missions, so his thoughts on matters lunar should be taken seriously.
<br>
<br>He is concerned that if the Earth were destroyed, there would be little or nothing left of the rich diversity of life on the planet. His solution is to build a DNA library on Earth's satellite.
<br>
<br>"If there were a catastrophic collision on Earth or a nuclear war, you could place some samples of Earth's biosphere, including humans, [on the Moon]," he said.
<br>
<br>"You could repopulate the Earth afterwards, like a Noah's Ark," he said.</em></blockquote>Their first moon probe, "Smart 1", is expected to arrive in November.

Weak part of the plan : "You" needs to be impervious to nuclear war.

If the "Earth were destroyed", as he put it, we'd all be mixed in with rocks and lava floating through space.

HOWEVER, if there were an ecological disaster that destroyed most life, DNA samples might be a good thing to have. But why not go cheaper and put the samples in a comfortable, self-contained underground bunker?

Bollocks! Humanity couldn't create a decent level extinction event if it tried. Nuclear war? Nuclear bollocks.

*Evisions post-apocalyptic nuclear winter...*

The fallout fans, sitting in holes sharing deathclaw survival tales and writing 'Vault tec' on all their ragged possessions in biro while everyone else rebuilds society with stored DNA samples....

*strange, strange imagination...*

God damn it, why can't we live in the fifties, when space was a non-entity. Dig down, don't shoot shit at the hunk of rock floating over us. I say nuke it. Better yet, use a magnet so that asteroids hit the moon, not us. Hell I want to make a movie, an homage to all those lame END OF THE EARTH FROM SPACE movies a few years back. Except it will be about the moon being destroyed by a rogue... satellite. Filled with atom bombs. And somewhere an underdressed, poorly acting blond will fit in. Maybe the love interest of the robotic slave-man destined by holy right to save the moon and become the God Emperor of Dune.

Talk about bad intro. All caps, piss-poor spelling, moronic content.

But not for survival. It was just a place to dream about and to put missles to shoot the ruskies.

Good point... everything in the fifties was focused on things coming FROM space and attacking Earth. Nowadays it's the other way around.

Exactly. That's why I demand the immediate and unconditional surrender of all of space. It has held it's angry fist over our heads for far too long. We humans shall no longer be subject to your whim. We are Man. We are strong. We will win. Please don't smite us with your universal fists of ice and poison gas. Or radiation, a la Night of the Living Dead.

Night of the Living Dead = Human satellite crashing to earth covered in nasty mean dead-raising radioactivivitationness. *nodnod* :bored:

In the fifties every child in america wished to be an astronaught... it was the space-lubber era. I say we... steal all the nukes, launch them into the most utterly blank area of space possible, then all sit down and play post-nuclear/zombie-apocalypse games. Yep. And dance dance revolution. (For no specific reason. I hate DDR in all forms personally.)

Wasn't there a movie about the Moon getting blown up and causing shit on earth?

Wouldn't be a bad idea for a movie, since the earth relies on the moon for continential drift and the tides.

The moon probably had some influences on human history too, and on our determination to search the space.
