How do you feel about 1st person RPG's
Turn based + third person, uh first person, I mean = no honey for you
And I am not saying we should go for non-isometric view and real time combat with Fallout 3, just that these *CAN* work as well. But they were not Fallout.
Arx Fatalis is a bit action-based, maybe, but it has an interesting story and character development. It's like a modern version of Ultima Underworld.

Maybe TB + first person was what made wizardry so utterly unbearable.

Why not to put it the other way around? What does a third-person RPG have over a first-person one?atoga wrote:What, exactly, does a first-person RPG have over a third-person one? In ten words or less, more or less, for the best.
The whole atmosphere changes with the angle, atoga. Try playing Far Cry or Doom 3 with isometric view and you understand what I mean. The same goes the other way around for Baldur's Gate or Fallout.

First Person on its own - It should have a Flashpoint esque inteface. So you can click on and grab things and still move around seemlessly.
However Combat should be either a lot more automatic or turn based - the problem: automatic won't fit long range weapons, turn based won't do with first person since you just sit and watch.
Conclusion: First Person is good for moving around and the exploring/talking part of the game, but combat should be handled differently.
Good mid term solutions - 3rd person ala Sacrifice. - Would be good for both turn based and real time strategic/tactical combat.
Some games that pulled such stuff off correctly:
-Incubation (unfortunately the story sucked, but the engine was real mighty) Grab it at HOTU
-Ever played Albion? Great stuff, grab it at HOTU.
Though an FPS game could be good too, but then it should be done in a lot slower quite tactical manner using Deus Ex like aiming routine, so it would matter what stat you have and it wouldn't be a frag fest. Say players could fire their guns with 50% accuracy every 5 seconds. The gun has a bit of auto-aim, but it won't be up to you how accurate it is. This combined with a Flashpoint camera controll, and you have a gun out of your hands in the hand of a real character. Also the camera should behave as in Arx or Thief 3 - tied to the character model. That's one of the reasons why a first person look could give more immersion.
