I'll be facing a 12-month service in no more than two years from this moment, propably in the infantry and from there I'll try to get to the reserve officer school.

Same here, save for the last part.
Doing my obligatory 12-month service when I turn 19 (after having finished high-school or whatever).

I possess a sufficiently developed sense of self-preservation to not particularly want to be involved in any of my nation's (Australia) Armed Forces, on any level. This facet of my sense of self-preservation is emphasised, given not so recent global political developments. Yes.

Mix with an insufficient drive to be a patriot, and I become a proudly (as many have gone out of their way to inform me) 'un-Australian' citizen of this fine, fine world. Huzzah. :drunk:

If you asked me this question during World War 2, I would have said yes, but considering the state of world affairs these days, I would have to say no. While I have no disrespect for my country's military (of which my own dad is a senior officer), I have no intention of fighting anybody else's war. The only action we see consists of fending off Filipino pirates, shooting smugglers and fighting wars elsewhere - in Bosnia, Indonesia, parts of Africa where the United Nations is involved.

There is no righteous cause, no reason for me to want to be in any of those places. Those people there probably don't see the United Nations as "peacekeepers" but rather as invaders, like everybody else whom they're fighting with. It's not my war, and it's not my country's war. I don't want to have any part of it. The same applies for every single one of you guys, unless you're living in Israel, in which case you're fighting to defend your country and not fighting anybody else's war.

Man, this kind of topic makes you wish that Hammer and Menno were still here.

I myself am of age to serve, but unless those dumbass politicians reinstitute the draft, I will probably not serve. Why? Well, I'm in college, trying to get an education and all that.

If that doesn't work out, I'll probably join the U.S. Army for a couple of years, for shits and giggles.
