Worldmap extension.

Post by Corpse »

For a while I have been working on a worldmap template that modders can use for their projects; recently I acquired a high-quality image from NASA which covers the entire American continent, I have been modifying a section of this image for a while to use on the Fanout project so here is a scaled down version of what I got so far.

Image

You can find a full-scale low-res and high-res version through the links below, if the image fails to open copy the shortcut and paste it in the address bar of a new browser window.

http://www.freewebs.com/herrleiche/wmtm ... lowres.jpg approx 1.5Mb

http://www.freewebs.com/herrleiche/wmtmpx100%5Fhigh.jpg approx 5.2Mb

These images are large (8853x3789 pixels) so they may not be displayed properly in some browsers.

Topographical maps would look pretty cool for the world map. I had these links from some GPS projects a long time ago, free topos:

http://www.topowest.com/
http://www.topozone.com/
http://130.166.124.2/ca_dems.htm
http://data.geocomm.com/catalog/index.html
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/index.html

The USGS site is wild. You can order a poster of an aerial photo right over your house. Apparently big bro photos the entire USA every several years. I was looking at aerial photos that showed before/after effects of the big loma prieta quake because I used to live close to the epicenter. I wonder what the before/after nuke maps would look like.

Here are the links to the original files from NASA.

ftp://veftp.gsfc.nasa.gov/bluemarble/la ... o_west.tif
Covers entire American continent, approximately 230Mb.

ftp://veftp.gsfc.nasa.gov/bluemarble/la ... o_east.tif
EDIT
Covers Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania; approximately 400Mb

Here are their terms of use.
For all non-private uses, the terms of use are as follows:
1) The imagery is free of licensing fees
2) NASA requires that they be provided a credit as the owners of the
imagery

Beyond that, there are two requests by the Visible Earth team:
A) We request that you provide a credit for the Visible Earth,
as the location where you obtained the imagery, with a URL
if possible (http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/)
B) We further request that you provide a credit to the Earth
Observatory team that developed the imagery, again with
a URL if permitting (http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/)

Again, (A) and (B) are completely optional.

Wow! 250 and 410MB! Those nasa images look very very cool. After looking at this stuff last I was thinking, what if the world map changed in the middle of your game? Say for example, some nukes dropped and changed the world map, that would be an interesting effect.

Based on what you have seen so far, do you think it is possible to change the world map at runtime? Is there any script function to call an external script? Or some other trick that could be done.

Your template, is it chopped up into the tiles for world map already? Will modders just be able to grab the files and edit the worldmap.txt?

This looks very very cool

I had some crater textures I used on a previous map but I lost the template, I am going to make new ones though and place them around in the final version.

As to making a tile of the worldmap change during the game via a script, I don't think that would be possible.

Finally to answer your last question, I haven't got it chopped into tiles yet; this is only a template and I am still cleaning up the rough edges. I will release the templates as for anyone who wishes to use them but I won't be releasing them in FRM form.

I may however release replacement tiles for the Fo2 map, may even extend it to 4 times the size but that will take me a while and will result in at least 80 FRMs.

Sorry for the doublepost but I have a new template which covers the entire mainland US.

Here is a scaled down low-res sample.

I am still cleaning up a few rough edges but most of it is ready for use, if anyone needs a section of this map for a mod just send me a PM and I'll get back to you.
