Another classic gets the remake treatment

Post by Mad Max RW »

[Community -> Update]

In yet another sign Hollywood ran out of ideas, David Goyer (the upcoming Blade: Trinity), spoke with Sci Fi Wire about his remake/update to Charlton Heston's 1973 film Soylent Green. You know, the one where overpopulation and famine leads to humans packaged in delicious green chips.
..."I will say that the reveal at the end of the first movie happened at the end of our first act," Goyer said in an interview. "So the first movie is kind of the first act of our film, and then it's about what happens afterwards."

The first movie, set in a dystopian future, centers on a cop (Charlton Heston) who investigates a murder, leading to the gruesome discovery about the principal food source of the overburdened population. The film's surprise ending is by now familiar to audiences, "of course, which is why you can't have that be the punch line anymore," Goyer said.

Goyer added that he won't write or direct the remake, but will instead act as producer under his just-signed one-year first-look deal with Warner Brothers...

Spotted at: Sci Fi Wire

I guess this is post apocalyptic? Human foodstuff is always fun, though.

The secret ingredient is crap.

I'm thinking this will be another Planet of the Apes. It has that "not a remake, a RE-IMAGINING" vibe to it. Really, though, Soylent Green? The movie is a punchline. They should have picked something worth remaking.

the Blob? lol steve mcqueens best film not a 70's sci-fi though.

Come to think of it, a shitload of 70's cult classics have been remade,
Dawn of the dead, Rollerball, Lost in Space, planet of the apes, etc.. heston seems to be a favorite with remakes

they should really have done omega man

They had plans for a new Omega Man. Up until last year Arnold was gonna replace Heston.

Heston probably holds the record for shitty actor involved in the most really good movies. (Then again, he's been in some really, really bad ones, too.) He has a unique shittiness to his acting, one that can be easily overlooked as long as there are good supporting actors. (This quality is what makes The Warlord such a great flick.)

I suppose they really would have to go for a "re-imagining" of Soylent Green, though. I'm sure even lots of people who haven't seen the movie know about the infamous closing line.

I suppose as long as they take the approach of not just trying to make a scene-for-scene re-make there's some hope -- no matter how slim -- that it will be worth seeing. I didn't see Planet of the Apes, but I will probably see Logan's Run (which is supposedly trying to re-capture the novel a bit more accurately) and maybe even this. Of course I'll wait till they're out on DVD and rent them...oh wait, I'll be in Germany when this shit hits the fan. :chuckle:

Thanks guys.

I've been back for a couple of weeks, though. Just been posting in the FoT modding forum, though. :)

I guess you can't accuse either one of "inhabiting a character", can you?

It's what I gathered, but thanks for the warning. I guess that film is proof that Tim Roth can't save a a shitty film no matter how hard he tries.

BTW, I just saw part of The Day After Tomorrow the other evening. I say "part of" because I fell asleep during it. Is it just me, or are other people bored stiff by what are supposed to be hair-raising, nail-biting, cliff-hanging scenes?
S4ur0n27 wrote:Arnold > Heston
I don't know about that. Arnie's just played a collection of muscle-bound twits, Heston is fucking Moses... ;)
