Hmm, usually, perhaps on some obscure, easily overlooked psychological level, you'll find that hate often equates to, and stems from fear. Aversion to unknowns and difference is a positively ancient survival mechanism, somewhat redundant now to an extent, but present nonetheless.
It's what Retlaw said. Iwo Jima is basically a giant godforsaken solid rock, so it's probably alot harder then normal to get a flagpole into the ground. They probably had to wedge it into some rocks.
Isn't that picture a fake? IIRC the original pictures failed and they had to take new ones later.
I'm propably wrong since I haven't studied this matter very much....

They guy who took it claimed that it was spur of the moment. He says that if he had posed the picture, he would have done it from the other side so their faces would be recognizable to family members who read the papers back home.

I think it was my old history teacher who told me that the photos where posed. Maybe she was a conspiracy theorist....
Anyway, I really wouldn't like to be drowned or suffocated. That's propably the thing I fear the most. But I dont have any problem with seas or stuff. Actually I like swimming...
my only fear is having an anal prolapse while I'm taking a shit and being stranded on the toilet with my rectal cavity dangling in the water. Other than that I'm generally alright with most things.
