Overrated Games

Post by Subhuman »

Midnight Club 2. I knew better than to put faith in OPM, but their rave 5-star review made the game sound like a cure for cancer, so I bought it. You can't even upgrade your cars. And the control, frankly, sucks. It's like Vice City crossed with The Fast and the Furious, only without any hookers or fender upgrades. Game Revolution got it right.

Onimusha. Just....ugh. Completely, totally, indescribably lame. If I wanted Resident Evil, I'd play frickin' Resident Evil. If I wanted Resident Evil set in feudal Japan, I'd play Tenchu. All the reviews said Onimusha was great, and all the reviews were wrong. Even Game Revolution!

Halo. Even though I haven't played it, I just know it's overrated. It has to be.

I loved Midnight Club 2 for the PS2. I never thought it was overrated at all....in fact, it was HIGHLY underrated. The Midnight Club series are my favorite racing games, but they were totally eclipsed in the media by games like Gran Turismo and Need for Speed.

As for games that really ARE overrated....Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Everquest, FFX, and Half Life 2 are the ones that come to my mind first.

Ah yes, forgot about BG. I was addicted for the first few weeks I played, but it got real boring, real fast.

Midnight Club 2 just didn't have the kind of customization that an "underground racing culture"-themed game should have. It didn't break any new ground, either.

I didn't care about "customization" or anything of that nature.

Midnight club was just plain fun. And you weren't confined to any retard race tracks that barricaded off the rest of the city.

If you don't care about car customization in a game that's based on the entire car customization subculture, then sure, MC2 might be the game for you. I just wanted something fresher. (But yes, the open-ended city was a nice touch.)

Speaking of overrated games, our very own in-house favorite Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines got a mention on Something Awful:

Troika: Releases Another Unfinished Game: Surprise! My favorite part of the game was the unavoidable five minute long in-engine intro that was so poorly done and buggy I actually turned off my monitor because I felt embarrassed. If you made the mistake of buying this be sure to laugh at the most hilarious representations of prostitutes seen in gaming to date.

Half-Life 1. It's a good game and all, but how exactly did the game itself (not the modding tools, mind you) change the face of the industry? Am I missing something here? And Halo is indeed overrated. When I played through the single-player the first time, I loved it. As time went by, it became the most unplayable piece of shit ever.

Quake 1 makes me motion sick. Nuff said.

Onimusha wasn't that bad. It wasn't the best thing I ever laid my eyes on, but it was fun for a while. The second one is pretty alright as well.

I think Arcanum got a bit overrated around here...

Bloodlines isn't overrated. It's been getting fairly critical reviews all over the place, even from people here who've played it.
How appropriate. You fight like a cow.

Counterstrike. The cretins who play it are evidence enough. MMORPGs as an entire evil genre for the same reason. The Final Fantasy series, for the same reason. :drunk:

I'm gonna say it again : Final Fantasy rocks.

As for overrated games : Half-Life 1 & 2, Resident Evil (all), Eternal Darkness, Zelda 64, Perfect Dark, actually, most games on N64 and GC, Neverwinter Nights, Black & White...

Final Fantasy is garbage.

I think the original Deus Ex is seriously overrated; System Shock did FPS with roleplaying elements much earlier and much better.

Another game that's seriously overrated is Derek Smart's Universal Combat. I bought it when I walked into a store, didn't know he was involved in any way, and read the promises on the back of the box. Worst $20 I ever spent.

No Derek Smart game can be called overrated. There's never any question that they're shit because it's goddamn Derek Smart. Overrated games are ones that every says is great but really aren't.

I'll drink to that. Deus Ex is way too damn linear to be God's gift to mankind.

Final Fantasy 7 is overrated.

Don't "overrate" a game if you have never played it, smartass.

Now show us your boobs?

I really like the HL series, Eternal Darkness was underrated, if anything, as well.

Overrated - every single bioware RPG.

them bloody GTA games are overrater fer sure. Recently I tried manhunt, which was a fucking waste of time.
Also them cockgobbling silent hill games are overrated.

As for halflife, the first one was good, not the best, but I wouldnt call it overrated. HL-2 was fun, but not great.
Doom3 got much too good reviews, so it qualifies as overrated.

Final Fantasy, Deus Ex. I swear I'll never hear the end of how "great RPGs" those two are.

The Max Paynes. Both were pretty uninteresting. Bullet time was fun for maybe 10 minutes, and the rest of the gameplay was pretty one-dimensional. Also, the cheesy attempts at film noir sucked.

l'edit: All of the Grand Theft Autos were amazing. Fuck you, Mismatch.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Id say probably Half Life but I played it years after it was released so maybe that affects my decision.

Halo is a fun game with co-op and all but its not OMG BEST GAME EVAR like most xbox people will tell you.

All the final fantasy games Ive played(ff7,ff10) I thought were overated including games like xenogears.
