Fallout 17th low point of 2004

Post by Mr. Teatime »

[ -> Editorial]

There's a feature at GamePro where they list their top 20 gaming lows of 2004. At number 17, they talk about Fallout:
17) Fallout RPG Canned, Reopened

Black Isle Studios saw its tragic end last year, and this year saw the disappointing release of Brotherhood of Steel, which like a long lost evil twin separated from birth, only served to tank the once brilliant franchise further. Hardcore fans hoped that the game would be picked up by Troika or Obsidian, but instead was nabbed by Bethesda, who plans to restart development from scratch--putting their own perks into the series.
As long as those perks are turn based combat and the classic top-down viewpoint, I'm fine with that.

And for the record, I have reservations about what both Obsidian and Troika would do with the license, given the games both of those companies have released so far.

Video games media just stroke me as ludicrous. I really can't believe some people get paid to write this kind of shit.

If someone paid me to write, I would. I need a job, but am stuck for ideas, and writing for free requires more willpower than writing for money :(

I'll pay you to write.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Don't you mean Isometric?

No. Isometric doesn't fit in 3D very well, check the Fallout 3 board for a more specific answer.

Yeah, isometric I don't think has perspective... it's done on a fixed grid or something. if it was 3D, there would be perspective, even if the camera angle was the same.

I'm fine with a 3D engine.

Saying isometric doesn’t have perspective is just ignorance, isometric doesn’t give anything but perspective, the whole point of isometric is to make a picture that is 2d look 3d. It gives the vision of 3d. Saying it doesn’t a perspective is blasphemy.

Anyway you’re right, Isometric wouldn’t work in 3d, it kind of fucks up the whole spectrum of things. I said isometric because you were talking about a top-down viewpoint I immediately ignored the factor of the 3d engine and said “Don’t you mean isometric? because both (top-down and isometric) are 2d.

Well I'm not sure whether it's right or not, but I meant it doesn't have.... distance. Everything is on a fixed grid, things aren't smaller in the background, it's hard to explain. But there's no depth, I think.

Silent storm - like Fallout would rock. The game would propably just gain from a zoomable & rotatable viewpoint, as long as the game wasn't 1st person.

SS's camera managment was annoying, but Fallout SS would indeed rock.
