The difference is capture in the eye is an 'important' book that gets referenced a whole lot and you wonder where ducks go in the winter. It's also relevant if you watch six degrees of seperation so you know what will smith is babbling about. A duran duran cd is just some crazy music that isn't really important at all and I might as well listen to madness. And I don't even listen to music anyway.

You'll probably like it, he's not as much angsty as just thinking what teenage males probably think i dont know. just go to the book shop and read it there for crying out aloud.

I think it's because most people find that they can relate to (sympathize with) Holden on an uncannily personal level. At least that's why I liked it.
I saw the appeal of Catcher In The Rye when I was 15 and I read it for a school report. Now, its just a book full of swearing without a point and on top of that, its fucking tedious.

Damnation Alley is a classic. Everyone should read it.

If you are into old sci-fi, Zelazny is a headpiece for interesting writing.
Plus James Blish is great even though he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

For the jillionth time, the best place to go for post-apoc stories and novels is unquestionably Philip K. Dick. Almost everything he wrote is set after some sort of global catastrophy and it's really good to boot.

Starship Troopers was great. Movie was mediocre compared to the book.

Movie wasn't even based on the book, as far as I can tell. Especially considering Johnny Rico is Phillipino, and not a pretty white boy with blond hair.

Stop talking about sci-fi. Okay? Okay? Got that? Good. I feel all tingly.
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

Indeed, Heinlein's book is a great one, much like a lot of his other stuff (though not Number of the Beast which is crap). And the movie actually had a lot of the stuff from the book, which surprised me. Still, it was mostly tits n bugs, which is okay, but it's far from what Starship Troopers was.
