I've gotten a lot more interested in this film after reading the first

I saw it tonight. I dunno, I guess I'd say "eh". I marked good on the test screening card because it's still better than most of the crap out there, but it wasn't great. If you're wondering, I've read the first Hitchhiker book a long, long time ago, and saw the miniseries several years ago. I think I was confusing a lot of the stuff that happened with Starship Titanic, but anyway, I'm not a Hitchhiker freak or whatever you want to call it, but I like Adams' stuff and I love British humor. I don't know, I felt like it was somewhat watered down and even a bit Americanized. There were some very funny bits (the sperm whale sequence was quite funny) and there were quite a few references to other stuff such as the Restaraunt at the End of the World. The basic plot is that earth is destroyed, and Ford takes Arthur off the planet at the last second by hitching a ride with the Vogons (who I didn't really think were funny at all). They're escape and hitch a ride with Zaphod and Trillian. The answer to the two head issue with Zaphod is that his head pops back and his second head appears. It's actually taken hostage later by John Malkovich's character. I didn't like that all that much at all, and the effects weren't really done, so it didnt look all that great either. Anyway, they're trying to find the computer that had been built so they can figure out what the "question" is. Anyway, I won't give too much away, but there isn't really any resolution as they are clearly setting up a sequel. So, the film wasn't bad, and I probably would have liked it more if I didn't have such high expectations. Mos Def was actually pretty decent and had quite a few funny parts with him and his towel. The guy who played Arthur was fine, he seemed good for the role. Zooey Deschanel was alright, but there was some kind of cheesy love story between her and Arthur that didn't seem to really fit with the tone of the story. Sam Rockwell was very good as Zaphod, I actually didn't even know it was him until the end. The best was Alan Rickman though, he was perfect as the voice of the robot. John Malkovich was good as well as the crazy preacher. He's really only in it for a few minutes though. I think the music was just a temporary track as I recognized music in several different parts. The audience I was with seemed major psyched, but there was only polite applause at the end. Pacing was a bit strange too, there would be some really, really funny parts, and then there would be long stretches with no laughs whatsoever. All that said, there was some really funny stuff, involving the mice, the dolphins and all of the hitchhikers guide segments. So, I don't mean to come off like it's not a good film, it's still worth seeing, I was just disapointed in it I guess.

NOTE: I just read another recap on aintitcoolnews.com from somebody from the same showing, and he said he 75 percent liked it. I'd probably agree with that. They were very close with the tone, other than the romance stuff. I did wish that it had been more British, and that maybe the American actors were partially to blame for that...It was pretty good, it just could have been funnier i think. check out his recap as well if you get a chance.

yeah this guys review seems totally 100% good.

I think the film will be a bit shit. Why the heck do you need a movie for a well-known book unless it's totally omg brilliant.
