Looking for a good NEW turn based tactical game

Post by Nightwing57 »

I'm looking for a new turn based tactical game (for a frame of reference my all time favorite game is JA2). I've been reading a bit about two games that have just recently come out but haven't seen any impressions from actual gamers. I was curious if anyone here has actually played either Cops 2170: Power of Law or Shadow Vault, and if so are they worth picking up?

To name a few I can think of right now : X-Com, Incubation, Odium(Gorky 17).

Never heard of those games you mentioned. I'd like snapshotties.

He asked for a good one, I don't think FOT counts.

I saw that police one today at my local hastings. It looks more like an action game.

Hello all,

New to these forums. Saw the question about turn-based games and wanted to reply.

I'm currently playing Shadow vault. Been going at it on and off for about a week and have only finished five missions. Darn thing is kicking my butt. Doesn't help that the english messages on the screen were translated from some other language and so the translation leaves a bit to be desired.

But otherwise its a good game. Just wish there was an easier level than 'chicken-hearted' ;)

Incubation or Silent Storm. If you don't care about age, I'd say go for Incubation or one of the first X-Com games any day of the week. But if you're desperate for something more recent get Silent Storm.

Sorry. Should have mentioned I've played Silent Storm and Sentinels (had to order it from the UK) to death (love 'em both). Looking for turn based so Fallout Tactics doesn't work (played it, wasn't impressed). Its my understanding that Cops 2170 is turn based and not an action game as one poster suggested. Has anyone tried it?

I've actually heard negative things from website reviewers about Shadow Vault so was reluctant to try it - although the customer feedback at EB stores was pretty positive.

Incubation - I seem to recall trying the demo when it first came out and didn't really get into it. I'll have to give it another look. I'm really craving a good turn based game and have already completely memorized every JA2 and SS2 map (including mods) to the point that they've lost a lot of their appeal (although I know I'll come back and give them another go in 6 months or so. :joy:

I've not heard of Sentinels what's the lowdown?

FOT does have TB modes and if since you can get it cheap there are loads of mods available, worth buying just for them.

I'm confused though, you mention being a big fan of JA2 so why are you asking on a Fallout forum have you tried Fallout and Fallout2? Not tactical maybe but still some of the best TB combat around if you play an aggressive character.

Sentinels is the expansion to Silent Storm. It really improves on the great game play of the original, adding more of an economic model (ie. buying and selling equipment). It is not out yet in the US, although its been out in Europe for 4 months or so. Definitely worth picking up if you liked Silent Storm (though its not offered as a stand alone yet - just part of a Gold Pack).

As far as Fallout is concerned - I've absolutely played those to death as well. Since this is a Fallout forum I assumed everyone took that as a given. My mistake, sorry. I loved the Fallout (1 and 2) games for the story though I honestly preferred the tactical combat better in JA2. Just a matter of taste I guess. Still, I can't wait for Fallout 3 to come out.

I think Cops got some bad reviews, exitium downloaded it and hasn't said anything about it so I guess its not much. I saw a topic on the codex you might want to check out. I haven't heard anything about Shadowvault though.

edit: Exitium actually made a review of the game at www.rpgcodex.com

Since you're essentially looking for another Jagged Alliance, why don't you try one of the many mods out there like Urban Chaos or go out and buy Wild Fire. Urban Chaos is a new and much harder campaign while Wild Fire is a remix of the original (Although is much harder IMHO).

You should be able to find a copy of Incubation fairly cheaply these days. The expansion isn't too bad either. It's just really bloody hard.

Underdogs just direct you to buy it instead. You can still get the demo from Blue Bytes.
