VotF walks off into the sunset
<strong>[Community -> Update]</strong>
<strong>DJ Slamák</strong> has decided it's time for venerable Fallout fansite
<a href="http://votf.duckandcover.cx">Vault of the Future</a> to close. It's been up since September 3rd, 2000,
so the site had a good run.
Slamák has written a <a href="http://votf.duckandcover.cx/en/index.php#166">lengthy and interesting farewell</a> on the frontpage
of the site, together with the Real Story punchline, perhaps the
longest-running joke in Fallout history (surely there's a Feargus line
in there somewhere).
<blockquote><em>Time passed and the site grew, as did the daily number of hits as I was
a decent pimp. After about an year, it began to outgrow its alloted
space on my ISP's account, so it was time to search for a new place.
Eventually, VOTF was adopted by the fine lads at Vault13.net. (Mad
props to JC, Greg, Morbius and others!) At the time, it was one of the
major hubs of the sprawling Fallout community, which grew in
anticipation of Fallout Tactics (back then it still looked like the
game might be good... ah, nostalgia). That was the best of times. I
recall fondly the dev chats at 1 AM (because that's 5 PM for you crazy
Yankees) and the mock "war" with Kelly "Please don't separate the X in
my name" X from Fallout eXtreeeeeeeeme! (Say it like you're
constipated!) XLA from Frenchvault, also V13's script guy, even set me
up with his news script and a database (mad props yo!).
But alas, it was not to last. After hosting trouble in early
2002, Vault13.net switched hosts like 3 times, and eventually died in
June that year. Everyone went their separate ways, and so did VOTF. The
hosting I went to kinda sucked, though, so eventually the site ended up
split in two: The Czech section was hosted at a prestigious gaming
server called Bonusweb, the English settled at Duck and Cover. And all
was good.
</em></blockquote>In his article, Slamák says he plans to stay around, even though VotF has had its last update. It's the end of an era...
