"Leaking" Chernobyl Sarcophagus repair work starts

Post by Mr. Teatime »

<strong>[Community -> Update]</strong>

In the "I'm glad I don't live there" category of news, <a href="http://www.mosnews.com/news/2005/02/18/ ... html">work has begun to repair the 'Chernobyl Sarcophagus'</a>, a shell built to contain the radioactive debris of the Number 4 reactor at Chernobyl in 1986.

<blockquote><em>Workers will only be able to spend a few minutes at a time at the site,
which is still spewing radiation, so they will have to plan out each
step of the reconstruction in detail, the Vesti news program reported.

...

Repair plans include adding a second shelter around the old one.
"Shelter 2" is a huge 19,800-ton steel arch designed to be assembled
nearby, then slid into place on rails to minimize workers' radiation
exposure. The sarcophagus is designed to last at least 100 years,
providing improved conditions for further stabilization work and
eventual cleanup of radioactive debris isolated inside.&#160;

Watch out for the dragons I hear lurk in the area.

What makes them think we'll be able to actually clean it up? Its just gonna sit there and contaminate for billions of years, or until the world dies, whichever comes first.

This is obviously just a political trick the pro-western whore Yushchenko is using to gain popularity among the ukrainian people...
There are no 'knowns'. There are thing we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that's basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns.

Do you live in Canada? If yes, then there might be a chance that that is exactly what they are doing.
