Post Apocalyptic LARP S.U.X
<strong>[Community -> Update]</strong> - More info on <a href="http://wikipocalypse.duckandcover.cx/in ... title=Post Apocalyptic LARP S.U.X">Game: Post Apocalyptic LARP S.U.X</a>
Some of you may have heard of LARPing, which stands for <strong>L</strong>ive <strong>A</strong>ction <strong>R</strong>ole<strong>P</strong>lay. Some of you may also have heard of <strong>Kamaz</strong>, who likes to LARP. Kamaz has sent word of his new task in the LARP world: to bring LARPing into the 21st Century with his <strong>Post Apocalyptic LARP S.U.X</strong> project.
Yes, that really is the name of the project, and yes, the <a href="http://dzelme.susurs.net//index.php/top ... l">article Kamaz has written</a> on the game is headed "<strong>The LARP is GAY</strong>". There are a lot of things to choose quotes from, so I'll start with Kamaz's background in LARPing:
<blockquote><em>But hey, it was different. I didnt know anything of LARPs the first
time I organized such event. I made game, it earned some popularity
(might I say, great or huge?) among people who had never seen those
western LARPs and therefor was much more open for new ideas. Inspired
by success I posted an article (post) in a forum of vortal I respect
very much - <a href="http://www.rpgcodex.com/" target="_blank">RPGCodes</a>.
It was then I learned about how wicked and twisted are western LARPs
and the negative attitude of "normal people" against this matter. I
could just leave it be and keep organizing the LARPs I want and dont
care about some computer geeks and their opinions, but I decided to set
on a epic quest to explain to those close-minded barbarians that a pure
concept of LARP is actually nothing "gay" or "lame" or "stupid" or
"silly". The implementation is what makes it so wrong. This far I think
I have failed and it looks, it has badly damaged my reputation on
international plane, but I still keep trying.</em>
</blockquote>
...and the dress code of the LARP:
<blockquote><em><strong>Clothing</strong>
The painful question. One thing about most LARPS is
usually gay and lame - unappropriate clothing. "Dressing-up" is what
people see on those pictures floating around internet. Postapocalyptic
LARP S.U.X is different. The rule number one says: "YOU HAVE TO WEAR
CLOTHING THAT ORIGINATES BEFORE YEAR 2004". Its very important, so I
capitalized it. Well, it means you have to wear clothes that are from
year 2004 or before. Not newer clothes. So, mediocre S.U.X player looks
... like everyone else. You could let him walk in a streets and no one
could tell the difference. So, take it suckers! Clothing - 1:0.
<strong>Weapons</strong>
Its sci-fi/post-apoc game. We dont have swords here. What do we have then? <a href="http://www.airsoft.lv/html/weapons/cavol3.php" target="_blank">Well, we have airsoft weaponry that does look realistic</a>.
In contrary to paintball weapons. It is way cheaper - in contrary of
paintball weapons. And has much more weapon modifications - in contrary
of painters again. In S.U.X you can feel what it is to shoot at someone
and being shot at. You get the adrenaline of fast paced, realistic
combat and that is what say everyone tried this out. If you think its
not for you, well, then, these male games are not you definetly. Go
play with some barbies. It is as realistic gunfights as possible with
not shooting anyone dead for real.
So, take it again, suckers - looks like real, usable as real and gives adrenaline boost - 3:0!
</em></blockquote>Kamaz has taken some pictures of the type of setting the LARP will take place in. Here are a few:

Unfortunately the initial LARP will take place in Riga, the capital of
Latvia, so Saint_Proverbius won't be able to play. Kamaz says that
there will be a European beta version of the LARP on the 26th February,
and after that the final date of the LARP will be decided.
If you're interested in finding out more information, you should <a href="http://www.duckandcover.cx/forums/profi ... 0">contact Kamaz</a>.
Good luck <strong>Kamaz</strong>. Please remember to take lots of pictures.

Funniest LARP'ing I ever did was Vampire, where we were toting guns at eachother...
Some dumb bitch looked in the window and called the cops.
10 minutes later two squad cars and a couple of officers in bullet-proof vests knocked on our door.
We explained the situation politely...
Dumb cops, we'd already informed them the adresses where we were.

I suppose that for most males roleplaying is some kind of dirty, dirty secret that must be contained to a computer or to books which can be hidden from view whenever a 'normal' person comes by. Because it is definitely 'gay' to let people catch you while you are dressed up and trying to be serious. As opposed to dressed up and goofing off, which is very manly, since it makes fun of anyone dressed up and serious. It's ok to sit around and play CRPGs though, because then no one can watch you pretend to be a hero/villain/assassin/survivor or whatever you wish you could be. Then your dirty, dirty secret will remain safe. Much like masturbation.
Personally I'm just too lazy to dress up and go somewhere. I also get bored rather easily, and LARP just doesn't entertain me as much as PnP. And I admit it, I'm a wuss who's too defensive to act out properly when I am stuck in my own body among fellow human beings. I really need the distance (and Charisma score) that a PnP avatar gives me.

RGE, I know there are tons of people like you and you are totally right. But Postapocalyptic LARP S.U.X is a try to breake those barriers.
There is no doubt that 'real males' or 'machos' need to be able to handle weapon, shoot precisely, survive in wilderness and recognize different models of weapons. Many 'real males' or 'machos' just simply love paintball and call it superior sport, there are military programs with paintball trainings. So, this is respectable endavour, isnt it?
And this is what S.U.X can give you. It gives you oportunity to try out in reality how good shooter you are, it has realistic weapons (much mmore realistic than paintball ones) and it really, really builds up your physical skills. I know what I say - one guy who 'larper' later joined the army. Folks say officers were fucking impressed by his shooting skills and tactics he had developed in this LARP. Paintball sessions are short, around 10 minutes, LARP is longer - about ten - eight hours the shortest. Therefor S.U.X is pretty much 'typical male activity' one can not be ashemed of since its pretty close to paintball and the good looking/cheaper weapons just add the bonus.
As for the RPG part - well, as I said, S.U.X is not that much RPG anymore. It has world, it has plot and it has quests, but virtual elements or character generation/development bits are so scarce they practically dont exist. You dont have any virtual skills, if you are good at shooting, you are. If you have great endurance, you have it, you cannot boost it virtually by gaining some experience. I would like to call it LA - live action but no one would understand.
We stress the atmosphere in our games and freedom of choice and consequence of actions and decisions. Its very interesting to see how the scenario ends if you help one fraction and dump another, or if you steal resources from ones and give it to others or smth.. "Quests" are nice side-missions you can take on that can result in ammo or armour or maybe food bonus or help you in a longer run. Thus, it has pretty much RPG elements in it.
After having explained this to people, they usually jump to conclusion - "oh the wargames..but what if I am not that much of a soldier-typo?" Well, first of all, you dont complain of the gayness of this event. And second of all, you have great oportunity to see would you survive in a post-apocalyptic world? Isnt it challanging adventure?
Our overall concept when making any LARP is "what you see is what you get". I mean, there are as less virtual elements, as possible. Our game areas are IMO very realistic (look at the screenies again), and if you have been told "there is an old powerplant, you must go there and get the electronic parts" it means there is actually an old powerplant and the electronic parts you are requested are real and, most believably, in working condition. Thus, we try to give to player an option to actually feel how the heroes of books, computer games and movies would have felt. And, I think, we have made a pretty good progress there.
But of course, its not that we say "everyone must lARP" its just that we say "even if you dont participate, it doesnot mean LARP is gay". Mostly it is ignorance that make people think LARP is gay, there are pretty much 'real-males' in LARPs and no, they are not latent gays.
Firstly, we dont dress up like super-heroes. Second, we dont pretend having any superpowers. If you are good at shooting with weapon, you are then and thats all. If you ca steal something and noone notices, you are thief then. We dont pretend having skills we dont have. Third, there is age restriction. Fourth, it is carried out in special game area, called "polygon". It means we have adequate and realistic enviroment. Fifth, the closest to "play the fight" we get is counting hit with a pellet as a death. You play fighting when you particiapte in paintball, dont you?
etc., etfc., etc., bring up smth new, dude.

I dunno, have you read the article or no, but there so many differences I am too lazy to list all of them.Someone care to explain the difference between someone LARPing, and a bunch of 7 yr olds in a superhero costumes at a birthday party where all the kids pretend to be super heros and play fight with one another

How is Paintball different from a bunch of 7 year-olds playing cops and robbers?Stainless wrote:Someone care to explain the difference between someone LARPing, and a bunch of 7 yr olds in a superhero costumes at a birthday party where all the kids pretend to be super heros and play fight with one another?

Some time ago, in the city I live in, a larper was stabbed to death by a couple of junkies. In the police statement they said he looked "menacing", so I think he was larping Vampire. Later on they chopped him up in their tub and spread his remains into the river. There was ice on the water doh, so they stayed on the surface until some kids found it.
It was pretty funny.

Nah they were junkies, drunkards and murderous scalawags for sure! But I dont judge them. Any drugfree, sober and peaceful human being can loose es' temper over make-up covered retards in black trenchcoats pretending they got magic powers and in claims that sucking blood is crucial to their survival.

As the urban legend goes, a LARPer was coming home late at night from fencing class with his jacket over the chainmail that he didn't take off. Two punks approached him and tried to knife him but the chainmail held the knife. LARPer then unsheathed his trusty "sword" and smacked one dumbfounded punk over the head. The other guy fell on his knees, begging "Oh shit, don't kill me, Mr. Highlander, sir!"

I still am anyway.
No difference. It's all about having fun, being someone else in another world and so on...Someone care to explain the difference between someone LARPing, and a bunch of 7 yr olds in a superhero costumes at a birthday party where all the kids pretend to be super heros and play fight with one another?
I haven't tried medieval LARP'ing, but the excercise there should be pretty high-lvl'ed...
imagine carrying around 40kg of chainmail/armor and then fighting on top of that... not to mention the fact you're trotting through a forest all day and night long! xD
They make good food I've heard.
