Robbie Stamp, producer for The Hitchhiker's Guide, whilst in San Francisco last weekend, gave an interview to Sci Fi Wire about the film. He says a lot of the cuts and changes from the original books were from Adams himself:

The Hitchhiker movie, like the books, centers on the plight of
Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman), who finds himself on an odyssey with a
ship full of wacky aliens after Earth is destroyed to make way for a
galactic bypass. The new character of Kavula is a crazed missionary who
lost the election with Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell) for president
of the galaxy, Stamp said. "He's clever, whereas Zaphod is stupid and
charismatic. ... He's now a missionary ... or a high priest of a cult
that believes we were all sneezed into existence by the Great Green
Arkleseizure that's waiting for the coming of the Great White
Handkerchief. ... It's very Douglas." The Arkleseizure is based on a
3-D model of Adams' nose, Stamp added.

That doesn't sound so bad. I wonder how, as Fallout fans, we'd feel if
it were Tim Cain and the original Fallout team making the changes we're
worried about - real time and first person amongst others - because
they felt it fit their idea of how Fallout 3 should work.
