Gamespy had the opportunity
to <a href="http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/vampire-the-ma ... discuss the closing of Troika with
Leonard Boyarsky. He talks about
projects that were in the works, support with Bloodlines..the
usual.

GameSpy:
Troika has been around for several years, and had three good titles
under its belt. Why do you think you weren't able to secure funding for
your next project?
Boyarsky: I'm not sure, you'd have to ask the publishers. If I had to
guess, I'd say it's because triple A titles are costing more and more
to make, and people are looking for titles that will appeal to a more
mainstream audience than ours have traditionally. In plain English, our
games just didn't sell enough units.

I guess there's no room for innovation anymore.
You've gotta conform...market to the peons, the worthless masses who
wouldn't know a great game if it broke down their front door and shot
their dog. Troika had potential, probably the most potential I've
seen from a game developer in a long time. The man brought 'em
down, though. I just hope everything works out in the end for
everyone.

Heh.. I thought I'd come back to this. Honestly, I think Troika had "potential" but that was it. They failed to maximise on it. Arcanum was proof they could make something worthwhile but it's not going down in my books as a "really great game" mainly because of the horribly implemented combat. Other than that, the game was good, it had a whole range of quests (a whole bunch which I still haven't done) and so on but I don't particularly find the combat fun.
ToEE was a bad dream. Hell, start with the wrong character and the game could crash. Drink the wrong potion and the same happened. It's complete lack of coherent story, overwhelming array of major bugs and the fact that it amounts to a temple crawl means you play the game once and that's about it. Sure, there are some other options in how you crawl the temple but I found it all a bit "meh". Especially since the ending is so easily done.
Bloodlines was great but not what I wanted. The ending brought that down and no option for 1st person melee combat in such a game was something I personally hated (given the type of game Bloodlines was). It was also a game based on a license which I don't particulary care about (not that I care about any license but Vampires is low on my list of things I want to play as).
So while Troika had potential, what brought them down was their own lack of ability to capitalise on it.
I'm just starting to read all the conversations now and I have to say Troika have to share some of the blame. That said, the fact no publisher wanted to buy a turn-based post-apoc isometric RPG also proves that the game I've always wanted was never going to be made anyway, so "the man" certainly takes the fair whack of the blame.
Had ToEE been bug-free though, I think things woul'dve turned out quite different. It would've sold a hell of a lot more copies (raise your hand if you know at least two people who didn't buy the game because of the bugs) and may have just been enough to prove that turn-based, isometric RPGs aren't all that bad. In turn, that may have led to a publisher and who knows?
