I have not yet had the opportunity to play X2. I have not yet heard much, good or ill of X2. I have not yet gone out of my way to educate myself regarding X2. However, you did ask for my thoughts on it, so -

Well... the cut scenes were so bad I had to skip past them and then try and guess the mission. As a useful gauge for my intolerance towards the poor cutscenes in X2 it was fine, but as a rewarding game experience then it's not so hot. I did have to sell it though so maybe it hasn't had a fair chance.
Thought's on Privateer? I only know it's a name for a private entry into a motor car race, as relevant as my applesauce thoughts unfortunately.

Hmm, though pending at least cursory further investigation, I do doubt that I will be playing X2 any time soon. Perusal indicates it to be ultimately unworthy of time. Oh well. Consider it an exercise in willpower, perhaps ?
Regarding Privateer, if you enjoy relatively non-linear, quality space games, I think it is worth considering. If older games and comparatively basic graphics are no hurdle to you, you might even enjoy the original. 'Twas a surprisingly well executed combination of combat, exploration, economy, piracy et al, all with a reasonable plot. Thoroughly huzzah, in my opinion.
I am saddened that you have not shared your thoughts on applesauce, Frowning.

There are no 'knowns'. There are thing we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that's basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns.
