Domain name and donations
There are no 'knowns'. There are thing we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that's basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns.

DU says his code will be finished on March 16th. So the site will be 'running' completely then, apart from a redesign.
As for .net, it's due to expire in April, but if we got enough in donations I was planning to sign up to a site that lets you place a pre-order on the domain, and as soon as it comes free, it registers it for you. It looks like we could make the .cx three year target if the donations keep coming it, and with a bit extra, we could place the pre-order on .net as well (it's $15 to do that, but that includes domain registration for a year should the old host forget to renew as soon as it expires). So we'll see. Again, thanks to everyone who's donated so far.

Pitched in my share, I would give more, but noone wants to steal my identity.
Just a thought....

Can you not plump for a new domain name with a cheaper suffix? www.hostway.com do domains for $6.95/year.

Can you find one that works for duckandcover, though? .com, .org etc are all gone, .net we may be able to get if we have money left over from these donations, and .cx is the only obscure one I think works.Stevie D wrote:What, of fifty smackers? Jaysus.Gimp Mask wrote:cx is worth every penny though

Point taken. But a cool $40-50 markup is too much of an arse-raping for a slightly more leet name, I think. Good luck in getting the funds together, but I can't help feeling that there's better things to spend it on. Especially when a cheaper name would just as easily save the site.Mr. Teatime wrote:Can you find one that works for duckandcover, though? .com, .org etc are all gone, .net we may be able to get if we have money left over from these donations, and .cx is the only obscure one I think works.Stevie D wrote:What, of fifty smackers? The other, cheaper names that are available are:
uckandcover.biz
duckandcover.ws
duckandcover.tv
duckandcover.cc
same for using duck-and-cover.
If we get .net, we'll probably switch to that because it's cheaper, but I really don't like those obscure names. Still, it is cheaper to use them... so we'll see. Does anyone like any of the above names? I don't

We do have enough right now. We don't have enough for three years of .cx, but we have more than enough for one year of .cx. So depending on whether we get some more donations, I'll either renew .cx for a year and put in a bid for .net, or renew .cx for three years - or even better, get .cx for three years and put in a .net bid. So as I said, we'll see.
There is also .info? is duckandcover.info taken?Mr. Teatime wrote:The other, cheaper names that are available are:

Tea, why don't you (or some other admin) make o poll about domain names? sth like:
"which _cheaper_than.cx_ domain name would you like:
-.biz
-.info
-.org
- none, and I don't give a fuck bout problems with making DAC endure cuased by insufficient funds"
I's personally accept any of these if it helps DAC running with no threats of being shut. But on the other hand we have our one and only MMRW who offered to pay the whole sum

I've taken this story down from the top story heading, but we still could use a few more donations, if anyone is thinking of it. We've got enough for .cx for one year + bidding on .net should it come free, but ideally I'd like to get .cx for longer so we don't have to go through this every year.
Anyway, thanks again community
