We're all going to die in 62 million years!
[ Community -> Article ]
That is, according to new research conducted at UC Berkeley and reported on at the San Francisco Chronicle.
Their research is based on fossil records spanning more than 500
million years, and they conclude that mass extinction on the earth
occurs in 62 million year cycles. There are some fun theories:

Or perhaps there's some kind of "natural timetable" deep inside the Earth
that triggers cycles of massive volcanism, Rohde has thought. There's even a
bit of evidence: A huge slab of volcanic basalt known as the Deccan Traps in
India has been dated to 65 million years ago -- just when the dinosaurs died,
he noted. And the similar basaltic Siberian Traps were formed by volcanism
about 250 million years ago, at the end of the Permian period, when the
greatest of all mass extinctions drove more than 70 percent of all the world's
marine life to death, Rohde said.

A lot of room for speculation. I read that aging and natural
death look to be the result of some internal body clock saying 'now
it's time to die' rather than organs declining in quality, so I guess
you could draw comparisons on how everything is connected, or
something.

interesting...
You know, for 70% + of all life to die, it's has little to due with the actual "events"... If you're on the other side of the world, you should survive most any catastrophe, least all that have been recorded in fossil records. So, if the "event" dosn't kill you, then what does? Temperature... That's right... For most everything to die, you need a global temperature shift of 10 degrees. Most of the valcanos that have gone off has shown that they weren't the actuall "killer"... For example, in the first "great" extinction, when small amphibions were makeing their way onto the shores of Pangea (only to be halted by natural events... Damn, I guess that'd suck... I'm sure evolution was pissed... All that work and nothing to show for it), there was a massive erruption within the Siberian traps... However, that only shifted the global temp. by 5 degrees... However, the increase due to global warming caused large amounts of methane on the ocean floor to rise and be released into the atmosphere... That by it's self raised the temp another 5 degrees... So, combine the two and you get a total of 10... Enough to kill everything. Rarely is 1 event by it's self so great that it wipes out all life... It's usually a "series of unfortunate events"

O and there are a ton of possible killers headed our way that we're "overdue" for... The yellowstone super valcono, Mt. Vasuvios, the Polar/magnetic equalization... Right now, we're in the peak period for comets and other debris to impact, due to the bobbing our solar system does through the galactic belt, causeing Sol to stray closer to other stars and have debri thrown towards it... Yup... There arent many things that are certain in life... But death is one of them... O, and taxes....

But... didn't the last big mass extinction take place around 60-65 million years ago...? One should think it's almost time for the next round.Blargh wrote:62 million years eh ? Fuck ! Now I have to re-evaluate my long term plans. Writing of species, we will all be dead long before then, given certain damaging propensities. Then, and only then, will this wonderfully stuffed planet wait for the next dominant critter to resume where we leave off.

Re: interesting...
That's retarded. The earth fluctuates far more than 10 degrees in temperature in it's cylce around the sun, you know.Europa13 wrote:Temperature... That's right... For most everything to die, you need a global temperature shift of 10 degrees.
It better be fucking soon that the world is destroyed though I am getting bored with just being disenchanted with the status quo.
