So I put my hard drive in my spare parts computer and it worked fine...Then they said it must be my RAM...So I put the RAM in the parts computer and it worked fine...Next they said it was the power supply (which is what I told them to check the first time I brought it to them...I've got lots of hardware and external things drawing power from the PC, so that was my first assumption).....Then they said everything was fine with my power supply, and that the only other explanation was a burned out motherboard. So they put the motherboard in an existing computer and it had the same problems...I was only out $29, though...So it's all good.
Nice. The only repair guy around me is expensive as hell, he charges $35 just to look at teh damn thing. He's an Intel freak to boot, so I'm afraid he would break my AMD system just out of spite if I took it to him.

If it breaks on me and I can't fix it, then I'm SOL. I don't have that kind of chingo to lay down on my computer (college books suck up a lot of cash).

Now I'm building a new one. Turns out that second link Pope posted kicks total ass. Kind of odd that when I choose one of the "Back To School" PCs and upgrade everything to top-knotch (exactly what I want) it is only $748, but when I chose any other system, the same parts ALWAYS equal over $1100.
You lucky bastard. If I ever want a dual-CPU AMD MP system, 3-4 GB of RAM, and 5-10 hard drives, I would have to build it myself. I love server systems. Big, big $$$ though.

Yo guys I need computer help!

My firefox sort of died last night and I lost all my favourites, history, plug-ins and all that other shit. Anyway to get it back? It's just gone back to default.

So I take it you made a new profile other than the default; what you need to do is call the profile manager to restore your profile.

To call the profile manager from start menu use run to execute firefox like this.
firefox -profilemanager
An easier way is to create a bat file; to do this just create a new text file in your firefox folder (ie: C:\program files\mozilla firefox\) and paste the text shown above in it. Finally save it, call it whatever you want and change its extension from txt to bat.

Now just execute this file anytime you need to run the profile manager.

It used to happen to some people with older versions of firefox, I would recommend getting the latest one but you will need to reinstall those precious plug ins.

Only downside is you can't game on it.

Why would you own a computer you can't game on?

Thats fucking ludicrous.

That's why Apple has only 3% of the PC market.

People use computers for stuff besides games. Like, say, work. That's what the Mac Mini is for.

They're cute. I want one.

I don't game much, really. Lots of video editing, photo manipulation, and graphics stuff. The newest game I played is Gothic II and that was about a year and a half ago. I will play it again as soon as I get about $800.

I ordered it tonight. It pwns. Sure it is old tech, but it beats the living fuck out of the Frankencomputer I had before.

Just click the link..The formatting doesn't work in the forums.

My New PC

I'm very impressed for the amount of product for the amount of money. For the most part this is equal to a top-of-the-line this time last year. However, it beats the living shit-fuck out of the PC I've got sitting in pieces on my floor. I hope to have it by next Tuesday.

Well, whenever I built a PC before, I used top-o-the-line pieces. This time I was on a super tight budget, so I had to go with some older parts. (Notice that it took me since January to save $800...) But yeah, I believe there be HT in that there cpu.

The fastet CPU I've found is 3.8, and 800 mhz isn't worth buying anyway, so you'll do fine with 3Gig...

As for the Graphics card, that's the only thing that makes me wonder, because unlike the CPU, that's a low-end card... so I'd have saved up more money, while sticking to your current card. Save up for a 9800, or a x-something card... the price difference isn't that high, and the performance is like 4 to 10 times higher...

I used a P2 233 from 97 to late 2002 to play and work every available program and game that had I had any interest in whatsoever, and it worked without a problem. I did an "upgrade" one time, which was:
"-Help my fix my crashed harddrive, so I dont have to moan about loosing 3 gigs of 'work'."
"-No can do!"
"-Oh..."
"-I'll take all your money doh and give you a new harddrive"
"-Rock on!"

And it did the trick!

But these days my comp starts crying over pretty much everything that wasn't crafted before its date of creation ( What.. 1½ years? ), it eats less power, never gets steaming hot, but is somehow partial to more loud fan coolage. And its about the size of Russia.

I want someone to blame for this. I mean sure, I can upgrade my gear every two months, for that 'awesome fitness' feeling when I play some of those shite glitter glam games they make these days. I can buy the silent fan, and the 'wow thats good' variations of those annoying pieces of hardware. But I shouldn't have to.
Just because some dumb fuck thinks sloppy coding is 'OK' because 'the majority of people fucking upgrade every 10 minutes and wont know the difference', or that filling computers with crap products of steadily decreasing value, and still upping the prices for it, is 'the way god meant it to be'.

I usually dont talk about this with my friends anymore, because they just stare at me like I'm some backwards yokel commie, and keep piling bullshit about "Well hey... You know, computers have progressed beyond the calculator, and they need all that duct tape cable crap you're complaining about." which is pretty bonkers.
Afterall, when comp development wasn't going near-light speed, developers were able to optimize their games and progs, to a very far extent. Same goes for consoles too, no doubt.

Heh. Seem to be blowing off steam here. Didn't even know I was pissed. :drunk:

You should try overclocking your PC. I did, mine is now constantly cooled by glacial melt.

Optimisation is a lost art on the PC.

I actually want a Gforce 6800GT or a Radeon X850XT. I've got the cash...But...I didn't want to spend an extra $400. The 9600XT is from my old computer. I'm not going to be playing Far Cry, Doom III, or Half Life II...In fact, the only games I'll be playing are the games I've had for years. Nothing on PC has really interested me since The Sims, and I might have to try out The Sims 2 once they put out the super deluxe whatever that includes a shit-ton of expansion packs.

I'll basically be doing a lot more image manipulation/creation, video editing, sound/music creation, and a bit of cartooning...Don't really need a high end video card for that.

Well, then you're set =)

No reason to buy an advanced graphics card then.
And don't waste your time on Sims 2, I had an interest in the original, and the first expansions, because you could build somewhat cool houses, but in the sequal you get to wait for all the interesting materials again, and that blows...

Unless you're into developing a sim, how they look and them having babies, then sure, go for it.

The Sims? That is what I consider to be one of the most meaningless games ever created... sure it is fun the first 5 h or so, but when you can no longer get new shit for the household and cannot be promoted at work, what do you do then? It just goes on into eternity, there is no story whatsoever. I didnt even bother getting a hold of the expansions that came after the original game.
But I agree with you about all the new games, they are all mostly just beautiful graphics and nothing else... Right now I am playing Starcraft for the 100 th time and it is a really good game, and for the first time I have put down enough energy to almost finish it(I never got to the Protoss-campaign before).
There are no 'knowns'. There are thing we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that's basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns.

For some reason the games I still play the most are BG2, Total Annihilation and Alpha Centauri.. oh and GTA 3.

Absolutely nothing new since SimCity 4

I just don't feel attracted to the new games, that's probably why I'm still stuck with a GForce 2 MX.. yikes

I play Sim City 2000 all the time.

As for The Sims...I've got a DVD Backup of damn near every type of object and skin you can think of. So much stuff that using only a tiny fraction of it causes the game to take about 24 minutes to load.....That really pissed me off.
