<p>Hellgate London is a FP/Action RPG, being developed by <a href="http://www.flagshipstudios.com/">Flagship Studios</a> which
will take place in a modern London that has become infested
with Demons. <a href="http://fs.kokeeno.com/gameinfo.php">They say</a> it will be as if someone merged <strong>Diablo II</strong> and <strong>Doom III</strong>, to form one interesting, yet dark action RPG...</p><blockquote dir="ltr" style="margin-right: 0px;"><p>"<em><strong>Setting</strong>: Modern day London, with a post-apocalyptic twist
The
game is set in a demon infested London, 5 years after an epic battle
between the demons and the human race. Guess who won. London was chosen
because of it's "natural dungeons" such as subways, aqueducts, and left
over bomb shelters from WWII. And yes, that was St. Paul's Cathedral in
that concept art piece</em>." </p></blockquote><p>It seems pretty
interesting... They state that they will use a "skill system"
which they claim is similar to the one used in <strong>Diablo II</strong>, for
gaining character perks & such, so it won't be a matter
of who's faster with a mouse or more accurate, etc.</p>

Yeah, Quake II I believe was my favorite in that series... Awesome sound track... Gotta love NIN... Nice cut scenes, just had a good feel to it. Doom III is pretty decent as well, like watching a really long horror movie. Ummm, overall, the whole "demons take over Earth or military base, etc..." is cool... I can dig it. Actually, the plot of this game kinda reminds me of Reign of Fire, minus dragons. I think it'll be interesting to see how they incorperate a FP perspective, while implenenting a skill system.

I would never call anything that equates itself with either Diablo or Doom an RPG, but it does sound like it might be a fun romp. We all know that "skill system" does not make an RPG. I sure wish the marketing folk would get that straight someday.

If they do go with randomly generated weaponry . . . brace yourself for the onslaught of progressive, identical (yet gradually stronger) generic toys of maiming and death.
'I FOUND A SHOTGUN +5, AND WITH MY FLAMING BUCKSHOT OF RETURNING I SHALL SMITE YOU VERILY ! BACK TO THE HELLS WITH YOU, PUNY IMP !'
Woo yay.

Diablo had random weapons generation? I didn't have the nerve to play it long enough to notice it (just one location loaded from my friend's savegame).
In that case, I'd be afraid of exactly this:
And the setting? I'm afraid it might turn out to be a "OMG look da scarry monstah and keep mashin da fire button" thing.
