I've read in a reliable source that Ratzinger's membership in Hitlerjugend was _obligatory_, just as resulting joining the army. Then he deserted the army and is overall said to have an anti-nazi attitude.
I don't know if it's all true, I've just read it. I've been to busy to keep up-to-date on such stuff.

Actually it isn't even funny. Back in the days you had to join the HJ if you were male just as you had to pay taxes if you were employed.

I admit that some of your news items are rather funny, but even though I don't think much of Bavarians OR conservatives, I have to say this one offended me a bit.

Calling Benedict XVI a former nazi just because he is German is pretty much the same thing as calling George W. Bush a democrat just because he is American -- and Dubya's political ideology is far from democratic.
