Not sure if I've ever mentioned my love for this game. I picked it up the day it arrived on store shelves back in 96. It wasn't the first RPG I'd played. I was also the proud owner of the original Dragon Warrior on NES. Sure, I was a console-only RPGer, but that doesn't matter. It is Super Mario RPG that brought me to Fallout in the first place. At that time, I saved my money and got games for the console. Why bother buying games for my PC when I could just download them? Back then I was more into DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, and even Quake 1...The computer was where I kept my FPS, the console was where I kept my real fun.

Anyhow, I started playing SMRPG again yesterday, and it was just as fun as the first time I played it. There are plenty of neat little hidden areas and such, lots of puzzles, a bunch of side quests...All-in-all, SMRPG was and is a great experience. Sure, it's not as in depth as a "true" RPG, and it's almost too linear in that you can't really say "NO" to anyone...But you do have to talk to everyone in the game to really know what's going on, and to get items for the various side quests.

Although I am in love with this game, I will concede it is not an RPG. It is more or less an isometric platformer with characters that gain levels and can weild weapons. However, it is an amazing game for any blooming RPG fan. My wife is now addicted. She has never played an RPG in her life, and she rather detests the idea. However, she can not stop playing SMRPG. Next, I will move her to Fallout. And then, well..I don't know. I've not really enjoyed any RPG other than Fallout. Maybe I'll install Morrowind on our other PC for her to fiddle with for a while.

So anyway, the point of this..whatever it is..is that SMRPG got me to really enjoy RPGish games. After playing it, I was on the lookout for the next thing to tickle my fancy. Fortunately I worked and had a social life so I sort of lost track of time, but when Fallout hit shelves, it was my first PC RPG purchase. FO2 was my second. I owe my initial interest in the Fallout series, and in fact to RPGs in general to Super Mario RPG.

If you haven't played it, then go download it. Play it on ZSNes (as SNES9x has a lot of trouble emulating the game). If you have played it, try it again. It's certainly a different sort of experience.

The RPG which got me interested in RPGs is Shining Force 2.

Awesome story, awesome characters, and a super fun TB fighting system.

And the main character is named Bowie

you should also check out Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. it's also a RPG/platform hybrid game for the Gameboy Advance. it's very funny, probably the best mario game ever.

I have no idea when/where/big I came across my first RPG.
I think I was born with intrinsic RPG knowledge, making the whole genre a natural thing for me.
Then again some of these RPG are so ungodly blowtastic I begin to doubt existance itself.

I'll just go back to spinning in my grave now.

You should try paper mario for GC, that might be similar. I downloaded SMRPG years ago and I remeber it being really clunky because it was all shiny looking instead to make it look next gen but it moved like crap. Too bad I don't really want to play games that are that old anymore, i feel outdated and even more of a swell guy than I am.

Earthbound was the first RPG I actually enjoyed and its like one of the only games I have played and finished on a emulator.

best! It's my favorite game ever with A Link to the Past! Everything about it is incredible! I feel so like a fanboy thinking about this game! It's the game that really introduced me to RPGs, I played some before but never had one caught my attention. This game is worth it, I finished about 10 times, I haven't played for a while since I fear the battery will go out like when it erased one of my games.

I have Paper Mario on N64 (Well...The emulated version, at least as I can't afford the real game). I rather enjoyed it. It's the sequel to SMRPG, but it doesn't compare to SMRPG in replayability in my opinion. Also, I don't have the third game in the series (on the GameCube) as I don't have adequate fundage. I think it's on my Christmas List for my wife, though. So I might end up getting it around that time.

SMRPG looks pretty craptacular on an emulator as none of the current ones run it "perfectly". It's got lots of random glitches.

I've yet to play Earthbound, though I do have it on the EmuPC in the front room. After I move, I might get around to playing it, but this week is all about packing up all of our belongings and getting a new home to live in.

I beat it completely when I was 15...Of course that's when it came out...But still...9 years later and I'm still able to pick it up and enjoy it.

I once had a website for Paper Mario when I was like 12-13 years old called "Paper Mario HQ". I abandoned it after a while, uncompleted. AFTER I abandonned it, the trafic came in like crazy. Great. Maybe you can Google it up if you want a good laugh.

Star Flight kinda counts as an RPG right? Yea that was my first.

SMRPG was pretty good and I admit I had a fun time playing it. Definetly places somewhere in my favorite RPG's of all time.

My first RPG was that Zelda game on the SNES, I think? Beating the chickens was awesome, I could have done that for hours. Too bad one couldn't hit the villagers.

Shining Force games fucking rocked. I'm not sure which one got me into RPGs but an early one I played was a handful of the Dragon Warrior Games.

EDIT: Fetal Pigs are tightest of all. Like a built-in donkey punch.

I got into rpgs from pnp and ultima III(which is linear grind by today's
satandards.)

Zelda is not even fucking close to an RPG. It is a great game, however.

Anyway, my first console RPG was Mystic Quest, from Squaresoft.
