When a mammal eats another mammal from the same species, it goes crazy after awhile. If a person eats a cow, their system says, "Hey! That's not my protein!" It then reconfigures cow protein into the person's protein.
But if a human eats another human, their body can't tell that it's not their protein and just slaps the stuff at the end of the eater's protein strands. When that happens often enough, it begins to affect the brain.
It's what causes mad cow disease, too, because it was started by leftover cow being put into cow feed.

So a feedback cycle of undifferentiated proteins results in the eventual
production of prions? (Or a reduction TO prions, more accurately.)
So we make a special "molecule sauce" that "spices" the yummy
human goodnes so it gets detected differently.
