It's not even that great. Instead of trying to be "scary" it should've been more diverse on the creepy settings. Also, longer.
Besides, what does FEAR team do anyway? Are they like Ghostbusters? LOL why did they even have to have a special squad to deal with Ferret Patel, or whatever his name is? Isn't there Delta Team or something? Oh right, Delta doesn't believe in PSYCHO COMMANDERS and ARMY OF CLOWNS.

So I'm watching the bonus features on the DVD dealie and there's a developer's commentary thing and they have five of the devs commenting over like the intro movie and there's that shot where you zoom out of someone's eye and this lead designer guy mentions how the eye is a thematic dealie you learn about as you play the game and I went "NO IT IS NOT!" because nothing like it appears again.
Anyways, FEAR was a good laugh. The game overestimates its own plot; it's not as good as the developers think it is. The BIG TWIST! is pretty goddamn obvious. Moreover, the gameplay isn't revolutionary. Linear level design with tiny deadend branches that yield loot aren't so hot. Shortness is disappointing. Another low point is the weapons, many of which aren't very interesting. The use of physics is also very weak. Okay, so I can knock over paintcans and the sound of a chair being rattled plays really loud if I get within three feet of a desk, but when there's like a single chair blocking a door, I can't move it. Kinda stinks. Also, the amount of dust that's kicked up whenever you get in a firefight is questionable. It's a neat effect that adds some new stuff to FPS combat (basically, do you shoot blindly into the cloud and hope for some hits or wait for the dust to clear and finish 'em off?), but it can get annoying sometimes.
In the game's defense, it does have some hidden moments of secret delight. One time, I was in a firefight with a bunch of enemy soldiers. I had just picked up the game's (lackluster) rocket launcher, so I figured it was time to test it. I blasted their position, which kicked up tons of dust. I heard the enemy's screams of anguish (and let out a Blarghian "oho") and waited a few seconds for the dust to settle. Then, a helmet, with head still inside it, splattered with red blood, rolled out of the roiling dust could towards me. It was marvelous, the kind of random zen thing that's most remarkable because it's not scripted.
EDIT: Other complaint--half the game's plot is basically Akira. This has made me want to re-read Akira. Akira is very long. I have more important things to do. And yet I read. Shit.
