Annoying popups

Make dumb suggestions so we can ignore them. I'm lovin' it.

Annoying popups

Post by Kashluk »

There's this new brand of pop-up ads on DAC, apparently... I'm using firefox with all pop-ups disabled and I get like twelve of these "ad.joinaxxes.com" -advertisements while reading through the topics. Could you *please* get rid of them or something?

Yours truly,
me

Yeah, pop-ups nowadays are triggered by Flash. Firefox doesn't disable Flash pop-ups by default. There is a plugin you can get which does that though it fucks with every Flash thing you encounter then.

I have been noticing the odd annoying pop-up on the sorcerers.net network though... Haven't been able to confirm it was sorcerers.net or some other site I was looking at at the time.

I used to get pop-ups on DaC, but haven't got any since I installed Firefox 1.5. I still get occasionally pop-ups, but they open a new window on the website, not on my browser.

DAC has always had pop-ups on the site pages only (I think) as compensation for not putting ads on all those old(er) subsites. You only get 1 every few hours, however. Any more means that you're either blocking all cookies or that you have some settings messed up, or that some regular ad is spawning them (which shouldn't be happening). If there's a malicious pop-up that spawns more, you should report it and I'll have it removed. Same goes for any regular ads that spawn popups.

I've never had pop ups here. But the Vonage banner ad with the sound eats my bandwidth and sounds really fucking annoying.

You can get AdBlock and block the "iFrame" of where th publicity appears. You won't ever see some again. You can put it back on from time to time and click on a banner to support DaC.

Obviously if DAC had to rely on advertising to cover the costs of hosting, Teatime would be paying out his pocket for it. I think this thread is a good indication how little people around here care for the fact that advertising is the only thing that helps to pay at least a part of the server bill. It's really too bad that the "let's make sure that the site loses even the few cents a month from me (that I don't even have to pay for) by making sure I'm blocking all the ads" mentality works online. Until the guy running the site gets tired of paying for the enjoyment of his visitors with his time as well as his money, that is... But hey, when one site goes down, there's always another one there, right?

Trust me, you'd be bitter too if you were on the receiving end of this shitty mentality for years.

Personally, I leave them on(removed them once for a day), since I don't really care about ads but if some people don't want them, it's their choice...

I understand the bitterness...

DAC should start a "Click on a banner" campaign. Just clicked one. It was invigorating. A little payback for the past few years. :salute:
