Give us $5
[ Community -> Update ]

We all know how much you love Duck and Cover. Here's your chance to show it! Taluntain (the guy who provides us hosting) needs some cash for a RAM upgrade:

Sorcerer's Place and all our hosted sites have grown and expanded
considerably, and the recent server CPU upgrade alone wasn't enough. We
need more RAM, badly. I've done all I could in terms of optimization,
but overall it doesn't mean much - we still get occasional blackouts,
slowdowns, and even complete server shutdowns because the load is
simply too high for the server to handle over a prolonged period of
time.
So, I'm putting out a call for donations. Money collected here will
benefit everyone, as it will directly improve accessibility and
performance of SP and our hosted sites. So, if you can, please donate
for the cause. The memory upgrade consists of a set-up fee ($75) and
$30 every month after that. That makes it about $435 for the first
year. I hope we can raise this amount in one go and then forget about
it for a year (before we have to raise it again). This money will be
used strictly for upgrading the server with another gigabyte of RAM.
Thanks in advance to all who decide to help out!

wait you have to pay extra for the server rental because U decided to put more RAM in it? and it costs $75 for them to stick the ram in the butt slot? Are servers really that much different than regular computers? Is this a special type of ram or something?
Tally has a problem with giving details for us. From what I remeber the CPU upgrade was like $160 bucks and we didn't have to take care of rental fees.
I know how tallantun thinks we are selfish and stuff but this sounds just like bullshit.

WTF? Are they gonna upgrade the RAM every bloody month? I understand covering the cost of buying (and possibly 'mounting by a pro' lol) the bloody memory module(s), but a monthly fee? Aren't there any servers that are more reasonable? I don't know much about hosting costs etc, so my question is serious and not ironic.$30 every month after that

He should pay us for going to this site. I think $435 is good (per year).
Fallout Tactics multiplayer: COOPnet and MegaCOOP map pack
Wow, what the hell? Was there already a monthly cost or did it jump from 0$ to 30$?

No, servers aren't that different than regular computers, but dedicated server hosting is different. As in, the service overall.wait you have to pay extra for the server rental because U decided to put more RAM in it? and it costs $75 for them to stick the ram in the butt slot? I was so excited about the CPU upgrade back then exactly because it was a one-time fee - which hardly ever happens, anywhere, with dedicated servers.
This RAM upgrade, however, is a standard upgrade (the CPU upgrade was a special, one-time deal), which means it goes through standard setup and standard monthly fee. It will double the amount of RAM in the server, and is a third cheaper than two 512MB upgrades, so it only makes sense to go for a full gigabyte rather than one 512MB upgrade now and another in a year. And yes, it sucks, and no, we're not moving everything somewhere else just because of that. Every server hosting provider screws you somewhere, and this one has been fair and good in every other aspect but RAM upgrades, so we're not spending weeks to move everything somewhere else where a provider will be saving money on protecting the servers from various attacks or setting up a shitty network where we'd get low speeds or unreliable hardware.
VasikkA, your donation's gone through, thanks.
If anyone can't use PayPal for some reason - you can always send a donation via a bank transfer or just regular mail in an envelope. PM me if you'd like to do so and I'll provide you with all the details.

2 more people have donated $15 (combined), so the total amount in donations gathered here is now $25. Thanks!
