These are the kind of games I'll buy and not warez, so are they worth it? If so, which one should I go with? Avernum, Geneforge, Exile? Can I start with the third installment of a serie or not?
Is the story any good or is it mostly combat and no story?

Geneforge. You must play Geneforge, it is one of the best games ever made.
All the Geneforge engine games (Avernum, Nethergates, Geneforge [duh]) have a lot of combat, and frankly, use a shitty combat engine. BUT, they have great roleplaying options, kick-ass settings and plot and are overall quality games.
totally check them out, mang

I would recommend starting with 1, as the sublimity of Geneforge has thus far deteriorated with each successive installment. Certainly, more bells and whistles, yet a weaker plot. Though not by much.
Personally, I think Exile/Avernum are both worth it, lots of fun and in certain ways superior to Geneforge. Play Exile first. Nethergate is fairly amusing, also, though I remember it being quite short. Which is probably more a case of being spoilt on length with their other games.

Avernum 2 and 3 are the best Spiderweb games.
Blades of Avernum is pretty fun too.
in BoA you make a party of dudes and load them into a HUB and then you just go on mini-campaigns with them and gain loot and levels, with different campaigns requiring different levels.
Theres alot of player made campaigns to play too, so you basically make a party and play through a shitload of campaigns and become super jesuses.

Super jesus must be that new prestige class I've been hearing so much about.
I want to like the Avernums, but the actual game screen is so small that my old, decrepit eyes can't tell what's going on. "What's my squiggle doing to that other squiggle?" The Geneforges don't have this problem so much and let you create your own army of naked monkey-men.
